In many circumstances a quality set of binoculars can be the difference between a successful hunt and coming home empty handed. Well, until just a few years ago I never really saw a need to purchase a quality set of binos, but as age started creeping up on me and with my eyes not quite as sharp as they used to be - good binoculars are something I've been looking at a lot lately. ...

McGowen barrel fitted to the author's single-shot varmint rifle.

One of the most commonly asked question I see on the forum is "Which brand of aftermarket barrel should I buy?" The fact is that most aftermarket barrels are made using the same grade of steel and the same button-rifling process, so the only real difference will be in regards to the manufacturers attention to detail, whether ...

A few months ago, I shot in a 600-yard benchrest match, and I was hooked, so I decided to build a dedicated long-range benchrest gun. Being on a tight budget, I had to build it with what money I could salvage together. ...

Selecting the perfect rifle scope for a new rifle has become quite an arduous task. Thirty years ago that choice was fairly simple as you essentially had two major brands (Leupold and Weaver) and a limited selection of fixed and variable powered scopes. My how things have changed as today we have literally hundreds of options to choose from. ...

When I finally got my project gun together I needed a good quality well-built scope base and ring system, but there was a hitch, I needed the lightest thing possible, so weight was the biggest factor, so that my gun would weigh in at our goal of the 10.5 lbs weight limit. The slightest ounce would make or break this goal, I did not want something cheaply made, or lightly built. I need a tough mount that would allow the gun shoot repeatable and hold zero. I also needed a set up that the rings was very close together, due to the scope I wanted to use being so short. This is when I learned about the Talley lightweight scope mount system that they offer.

    Before this, I had ...

To begin let me start by saying that this is only the tip of the iceberg, I could write a 2nd article just on the iron sights themselves and the different ones for different models. What Ill try to do with this short article is give you an idea of what you have for the first time Savage owner. I wont be covering any of Savages newer offerings but rather the old pre-1960s rifles.

Last summer I happened to pick up a stainless steel barrel at a very cheap price. It was a rather unusual looking piece being it had been fluted in a radial pattern. It was also different in the fact it had started life as a 22" medium sporter contour .243 Winchester caliber and was now a 20" 6mm BR Norma. ...
