Standard rifling on left, Ratchet Twist on right.

Needing a new barrel for my long range Savage I decided to go with a Shilen barrel - but not the normal six groove rifled barrel, rather their “Ratchet Rifled” four-groove profiled land barrel. The Shilen “Ratchet Rifled” (or as I call it, the “Ratchet Twist”) barrel has a radical rifling design that has little publicity or little known about it.

Ever since I was first introduced to Savage firearms back in 2001, I had always wondered why they didn't offer their Model 210F Slug Gun in a 20-gauge version. It just made sense to me as not all guys like the brutish kick of a 12-gauge slug gun, and most female and youth hunters would be far more comfortable with the smaller gauge. ...

News that Leupold & Stevens, Inc. had purchased the Redfield name and intended to revive the brand first hit the presses back in the spring of 2009. By the fall of 2009 the new Redfield Revolution line of hunting optics entered initial production and the new models were finding their way into the hands of gun writers at many of the well known publications. ...

In the past few years we’ve seen a rather new trend develop in the firearms industry, that being an onslaught of so-called “tactical” firearms. First it was the shotguns followed shortly thereafter by bolt-action centerfires, and last year we saw a plethora of tactical rimfire rifles in both bolt-action and semi-automatic variants. ...

One of the top-selling segments in the rimfire market is and always has been semi-automatic rifles. They’re fun little plinkers that young and old alike can enjoy shooting all day without breaking the bank, and most are reasonably affordable. Today we’re going to look at Savage’s Model 64FV-XP package rifle, which is their sole heavy-barreled semi-automatic offering.

In the spring of 2010, Savage unveiled their new top-secret rifle the Edge, and within less than two moths after Savage unveiled this new rifle, EGW created a new, one-piece Picatinny/Weaver mount for it. At this time, there is no other alternative for a one-piece mount, for the Edge. This is the first product I have ever gotten from EGW and I will evaluate this new mount and describe how it fits, works, and how well it is made.

The Edge is a new altogether different design rifle that has a dissimilar scope base mounting distance than that of the 110/10 model Savage rifles. The Edge is able to use the two-piece mounts made for a round back Savage 110/10 series rifle, but this limits the availability of ...

When someone mentions the name Leupold, people automatically recognize the name for top-notch quality in sporting optics. I was excited to get a Leupold FX-3 competition silhouette scope, and hopefully it would fill my need for a lightweight benchrest scope that would fit 1-inch rings.

When I first read about Leupold’s new line of laser rangefinders I knew right away that I wanted to get my hands on one. The feature that drew me in the most was the True Ballistic Range feature which all but eliminates the need to mentally account for uphill and downhill shots with either a gun or bow. Rest assured I’ve missed more than one deer due to not taking into account the angle of the shot in the heat of the moment.

The RX-III combines laser rangefinding with digital electronics, an inclinometer, and the ability to deliver both True Ballistic Range - the ballistically equivalent range to the target - and the conventional line of sight distance measurement. Additional features include a built-in thermometer, scan mode, low battery indicator, and Leupold's Match 13 Reticle ...

The year of 2009 has been a big year for Savage as they have released several new models to their lineup. One new rifle in the line-up that caught my eye was the new Model 10 Precision Carbine. This rifle features the new “Accu-Stock” with a digital camouflage finish, a shorter 20” barrel with a medium-heavy contour that falls between the standard heavy “varmint” and “sporter” contours, and a detachable magazine. ...

AR styling meets bolt action precision, the result being the new Savage Model 10 BAT/S-K in .308 Winchester. When I first opened the box I was very impressed. I had seen pictures of this fine rifle online, but to actually handle one brought it home how much effort Savage put into this new law enforcement offering. ...
