• Quick Tip: Savage Bottom Bolt Release “Third Hand”

One aspect of the bottom bolt release on Savage rifles that some find problematic is that they find it difficult to hold back the bolt release button so they can unscrew the action screw that is underneath.

If you let the plastic bolt release button ride against the bolt or hex wrench as you remove or install the action screw, the threads on the bolt and the edges of the wrench tend to chew up the front of the bolt release button.

As it turns out there is a very simple and effective solution to this problem.

When you push the bolt release button all the way to the rear, there is just enough of a gap in the trigger guard near the front sides of the bolt release button that you can push an unbent small paperclip wire into the gap it will hold the bolt release button to the rear so you can access the action screw.

I tried this with both a metal trigger guard and a plastic trigger guard and it worked both times.
