The heart and soul of any rifle is the action, and the Savage Axis action is an ideal candidate to base a custom rifle upon. The $300 entry price for an Axis rifle gives you an action that is suggestively more rigid than a standard Savage 110-series action, and it’s more than a hundred dollars less than the cheapest new 110-based donor rifle.

When discussing the Savage Axis rifle, there are two main shortcomings that come up time and time again. The first is the flexibility of the stock and the second is the heavy, gritty factory trigger. The former has been discussed ad inauseum in numerous posts and is not the subject of this article.

As most of you are aware, the Axis can be quite the little shooter. With a little work anyone with even marginal skill can do, it'll be worthy of a bipod or it can be rested on the forend without the stock touching the barrel. I've modified several of these & it gets easier each time. The procedure I'm going to explain will cost the average Joe about $15 & takes about 2 - hours to complete.

On my eleventh birthday, I received a Savage 110 in 270 Winchester as my first centerfire rifle. I received this rifle from a man unrelated to me, but was like a father to my dad and a grandfather to me. I got my first buck that year with it, on my father's birthday - only took me 4 shots to get one hit with all that buck fever. ...

The rifle started its life out as a bland 30-06. For a hunting rifle, accuracy was everything expected out of a savage producing about .5 MOA at 100 meters. However, I wanted a rifle that was much more precise for longer range target shooting. I chose the classic 7mm Remington Magnum for the cartridge. I also wanted a rifle that had less felt recoil than a 30-06. ...

Here is my old rifle. I built this off of an old Savage rifle I had - my first brand new left-hand bolt-action that I had purchased 20+ years ago. I built this one using parts I bought online, both new and second hand. It was built to be a long range hunting rifle and the rifle and cartridge both performed exceptionally well.
