Chris Dichter of Pac-Nor confirms that the 416 Ruger can be necked-up to 458 and still have enough shoulder to headspace properly.

Should make a pretty decent medium bore.

I was thinking a 17 / 375 ruger would be a better way to go.

Is that with a standard "neck up" or does some kind of sharper shoulder need to be formed? A 458 Ruger would surely find a home in my rifle rack.

Had them make me a 416-375 Ruger before the 416 Ruger was commercialized.

It was a straight necked-up case with no other modifications.

Believe the 458 Ruger will be the same.

Somewhere in my brass collection I have 375 Ruger case necked up to 458. I made up a 458 and 416 version as soon as I got my hands on a 375 Ruger a couple of years ago. There isn't a whole lot of shoulder on the 458, but there's enough for it to work.

I wonder if a 458 winny could be rechambered...from what I can see in the case dimensions, it should be possible....although the throat would be very long for it.

Probably. Set it back to get rid of the belt relief.

That is the issue with 458wm is the freebore is ridiculous.

Its so long you can actually load long bullets at 458 lott COL
and it would be roughly the same.

The Ruger case just barely cleans up the belt on a belted magnum chamber. I have a 338 Win Mag that I rechamberd to 338/375 Ruger. If you look close, you can still tell where the belt was in the chamber. It doesn't seem to affect the chamber at all though.

I would like the Alaskan in that round. It would do as a 45/70 & more when you want it, a reloader's bonanza!
