I have an opportunity to purchase a heavy 308 barrel for my 30-06 110 (long action). I have been unable to determine what sort of box magazine I'll need to make this work. Savage used to only make the long action, and chambered them in the usual long action & std length magnums, but with the advent of the model 10 length action, the old short calibers in a long action went the way of the dinosaurs. Does anybody know if I'll need a special magazine box & follower to make this project feed from the mag box?

No, you should be able to just switch/headspace to the .308 barrel and be good to go. I'm use a LA with standard magazine (30-06) with a .260 barrel without feeding problems.

+1 what "jpdown" said. I build all my rifles on long actions. My bench rifles are single shot so I use a single shot follower and don't worry about the magazine at all.

308 Win should feed fine from a Savage long action magazine.

It does. Here's a good example of what happenes when you don't pay attention and chamber a .308 in a 25-06. ::)

WOW. What happened to the bullet? Did the barrel blow up?

Nope. Hit the paper 3" high at 100yds. ;D I saw nothing wrong with the barrel or action afterwards. Just the bolt head. Blew the extractor out and sandwiched the case into it.

Didn't even notice a problem until I went to chamber another round and the bolt was locked down. Smoke pouring out the little ports in the action.

This happened years ago, and Savage even let me pick any rifle in their catalog in exchange for using my story and pictures. Oh, I also had to give 'em my action.

man, i cant imagine the pressure required to swage that 308 down to 25 cal to push it out the barrel. i can only assume that would wreck the bore!?!

at least on the brite side you still have 2 eyes, 10 fingers and get a new rifle of your choice from the catalog. what did you choose? a nice model 12?

Oddly enough, I chose a model 111hns. They hadn't yet started production at the time. 25-06 of course. ;)

Incidently, the rifle I'm trying to sell is an exact replica of the one I burnt up exept for the stock color.

This was it.

i saw that and i figured. if we were 3 months down the road i may be ready for my target rifle build and may have decided to snatch it up from you but i have to pay off my CC from my current project first...its the agreement that the wife and i have and its worked out so far. :)

Some interesting information here, but back to the original question.

Savage originally chambered all cartridges in the 110 long action.

True, but they still used a short action length magazine box. My 338 Edge is built on a 110 long/short action.

I've built several short action chamberings on long actions. Center feed was easiest, but stagger feed worked well too.

However, the receivers will milled shorter for the SA cartridges, with a bolt stop to mimick a short action "throw." I have a 110 LA in a 243 that has a short action magazine.
That said, I have converted LA 110's to WSM rounds with little issues in feeding other than adjusting the width of the magazine "lips."

Sweet.

Good thing you came out unscathed.

Holy smokes! I can only imagine how loooong that .308 bullet was after exiting the barrel. I'm surprised it didn't shoot a lot higher than just three inches. Hmmm..... Wonder if Winchester would cut me the same deal if I fired a .308 in my 25/06 ?? ;D
