Model 12 savage in 223 rem.

What kind of accuracy would be expected from a model 12 in 223 rem. With a durramax stock. Printing about .750 inch with 52 grain hornady match bthp seated to 2.312 and 25 gr. of imr 4895. Shoots 1.5 plus with factory ammo. Shot off bench with bags at 100 yards. Scope is a bushnell banner 6x18. Suspect scope is the problem but wanted to know what kind of accuracy to expect before changing scope.

It'd shoot tighter but I was doing load development and still learning my trigger skillz.

If the sub-MOA you've got with handloads (that halved your factory ammo results) ain't good enough maybe try bedding the Duramaxx or a different load recipe?

With an experienced shooter, shooting tuned ammo, most Savages will shoot around 1/2 MOA. The gun should be able to consistently shoot 5 shoot 100 yard groups at or just under a 1/2 inch, (.5) with an occasional group or two in the .3 area.

IMR 4895 is a good powder for a 223. I have found that N133 works very well in a 223, with 52 gr bullets. I have seen a few guys compete with Model 12 LRPV and shoot great groups averaging in the .4 area all day long, using this combo. You gun should be able to do the same. Another good powder is H335, and H322.
Here is a few pictures of typical groups out of a Model 10 Precision Carbine I had in 223. This gun has a lighter barrel than your 12, and I thought the accu-stock did not stand up to what the laminate stock can produce.

Why? It will shoot the lighter bullets just fine. In fact for short range work, the flat-base bullets are usually more accurate regardless of twist.

My 12FV in .223 hated every factory round I've fed it, but handloads from 50gn-75gn shot well.

sure go for it try some 35 grains why not ;)

I've shot 36gn (Varmint Grenades) and they shoot just fine. The only 35gn that I'm aware of are meant for the Hornet and will also shoot fine in reduced loads. They are velocity limited regardless of twist rate.

when you going to call Savage CS and complain about accuracy, first thing they going to ask you: What ammo are you shooting, then they will tell you, that since this is 1:9 twist this rifle is design to shoot 69 gr Federal or Remington something, this is for your knowledge in case you have to call ;-)
