View Full Version : how many action do you have for barrel swaps

I am feeling the squeeze, 8 barrels and only 2 stocked actions to work with. I found a left handed accutrigger 243 but would prefer a long action. My 65x284 could work with this for single shot, and if I hunt with it just load up something on the short side. Will the brass fit in the standard size centerfeed mag, they work fine in a magnum size centerfeed and a standard size staggerfeed. I can't decide on this, if it were a long action it would be home with me.

One can never be too rich, too thin, or have too many actions.....or was that too much action?

I think Uncle Jack pretty much summed it up...
I have had a heck of a hard time bringing myself to take a rifle down once I get it shooting... I started off switching barrels and have slowly been adding actions whenever I find a deal...

.
A couple dozen of each is not enough.

Yeah, I won't do it either. If I can't afford to buy the parts to finish a complete rifle then I won't change the barrel from another rifle just to shoot it.

They have all been changed once and then they tend to stay put.

I have four actions.
My LH long/short action is my dedicated 338 Edge.
My LH 116 CF DBM swaps between a couple WSM's
My LH 112 SF swaps everything else 223 up to 300win.
My RH 10 is usually a 308 for my wife to antelope hunt. She is a righty that shoots lefty, but prefers a righty gun. ::)
I only have two short actions ... that I swap and play with.
I don't like the long actions as they are gigantically long.
I'm lusting after a LRPV single shot to act as a chassis for some accuracy chamberings.
Cheers...

Well, lets see,
A 110V ("J") in .223 that started the "Savage" thing, then to .221 Fireball, back to .223, then to 6BR, then 22BR and now it's a 6.8 SPC.
A 116 SS in .204, unfired and changed to 22 BR.
Model 12 single shot in .221 Fireball.
Model 12 single shot in 6.8 BR.
Model 12 "lefty" for a SP build in 22 BR. Changed that to 6BR rifle.
Still looking for another action at the "right price". ;)

OK I have 2 I don't mess with,
111fc 30-06 [deer rifle]
Stevens was origanally 22-250 now, mod.12 223 barrel,Boyds thumbhole, Basix trigger, etc. [1st. build]
Stevens 7-08 now changes from .223 to .243 to .308 sporter depending on season and mood.
Stevens 25-06 now .243 varmint
and 2 more Stevens 7-08 that haven't been touched yet, but will probably be a .223 with CBI and a 6br.
everything is subject to change.

Do you have/use many long action chamberings, if so, how do you like using them in the short action?

I run 7mag & .30-06 size cases through a short action. Already a single shot so no mag problem. Empty cases eject fine. only drawback is releasing the bolt to get a loaded round out if you do not fire it for some reason.

Well what should I expect, a junkie asking advice from a bunch of junkies ;D
I now have 9 barrels and 3 stocked actions. Lefty wood stock accutrigger for 350. It has a 243 with sights that I really don't need.

I have a big problem... every time I get an action to make as a dedicated switch barrel action I put it together and like the barrel and can't make myself take it apart

None ... not really interested in them.
My '223' action is off getting two 6x45 barrels fitted ... and a 30-223AI ... the original 223 barrel will most likely get AI'd as well.
My '308' action has 243Win, 7-08, 308, 358 barrels ... with 375-08 and 30-250 being planned.
I like to 'experiment' with different chamberings (particularly wildcats) and despite being an advocate for the 30-06 for a long time ... am coming to appreciate the 308Win more and more. One that really piques my interest is a 270-08 ... got to get me one of those.
Cheers...

Once a build is done, that's it, the barrels on for good. Unless it was threading or something.
I'm more likely to switch ... if I like a receiver, its stock and handling ... I'm just as likely to have a 358Win barrel on it over our deer hunting season ... and slip on the 243Win for summer varminting.
What I really need though is a spare 308 receiver (or bolt and I'll use my 223 receiver)... so I can experiment whilst the other rifle is in 'hunting' mode. Ideally ... the 'spare receiver' will be a LRPV. ;D
I think that's how the dreaded disease starts to take off. Now how to explain to the Boss that that logic caused me to buy an LRPV?
Cheers...
