Opening up the bolt face on a .30-06 Savage 110.

Hi guys

I'm new to this forum. I have an old Savage 110 chambered for the .30-06 and I am considering a rebarrel to the .416 Taylor.

Do anyone know if it is possible to open up the boltface to .532 to fit the .416 Taylor case?

No need to open the boltface. Just swap the bolthead. Midway carries them, but they are often out of stock.

Thanks for the tip. Can I use the same firing pin when changing the bolt head?

They do have 2 different dia firing pin set ups. Forget the dia. at the moment. But even if you have the large one the head can be drilled out if you wind up with a small head.
The Taylor is a hard hitter, makes you thing your shooting a light weight 12 gauge single shot slug gun!!! From a bench 3 or 4 was all I could take. Standing you can do a few more. 12 from a hand gun was it also, could not finish the 15shot match. :)
They are very easy to reform the cases.

When you order the magnum bolt head from Midway make sure you order all the parts for the bolt head. They only come stripped. You'll need the extractor, extractor ball, extractor spring, ejector, ejector spring, and ejector pin.

It's all fairly inexpensive and fun to put together.

Like BA said, check your firing pin diameter. If you have a large pin, I'd recommend ordering a small diameter firing pin assembly and retaining pin. Then you'll never have to worry about it again and you'll be less likely to break a cross pin.

I checked Midway now and could only find the ejector spring, but not any of the other parts. Are there any other stores which may carry them?

You can move your small parts to the new head. just point it into a baggie when you slide the extractor out or the ball and spring disintegrate at the hyper speed they travel and are never see again

Don't forget the new magazine and follower you will need for the Taylor.

I have two Taylors built on Savages -- one carbine and one rifle.

Years ago in Handloader magazine think Bob Hagel did an article on the 416 Taylor.

The 416 Taylor can also be found using other names.

What kind of stocks did you use for your .416 Taylors? I'm a left hand shooter and that limits the selection some.

Stockade makes great stocks for the 110.

Another option would be to get a B&C Duramax and cut a slot for the LH bolt. Fill up the RH slot or leave it alone.

So the B&C Duramax is a straight fit except the slot for the bolt?

What about the Boyd's Classic left hand stocks made for a right bolt, does they fit too?

On the Boyds stocks just cut a new groove for the bolt. Thier new stock for Savages is really nice. When I save enough quarters I will be putting one on a Savage 110 and a custom Mauser I have had for years. If you like checkering, call and ask about getting a stock checkered for $50 extra.
