started to shoot @300yrds and have an older 110 in 300 mag to play with

finally found a range that has a 300yrds range with talks about adding a 5-600 yds range in the furture.right now i shoot a lrpv in 223 and a tigershark in 308 but have this model 110 in 300 win mag sitting in the back of the safe collecting dust so i'm thinking of rebarreling it for maybe a f-class gun (heard there is a 7-1k range within driving range from me). so what caliber would work in a long action (no brake) that wouldnt destroy my shoulder when i put 100-150 down the pipe in a sitting ?

I use a 6.5/284 at 1,000 yards, I love it!!!
I'm told the these burn barrels after 1,500 rounds, I've had mine 3 years and have 900 rounds through it. I ordered 2 barrels when I had it built, one for the build and one for later if the thing goes bad. The 6.5/284 is a great, accurate round. But I just bought a Savage 110BA in 300 Win Mag, got it for $1500, had been shot 60 rounds. it came with 60 cases, and 20 live rounds plus a set of Leupold rings. Just got it 3 days ago, I'll give you a range report soooooon!!!!
I hear great thing about the 300 WM at 1,000 yards..... That said, I have a 308 that kicks butt at 600, I have not done well at 1,000 with the 308, but I see guys at my 1,000 yard range that do VERY well with the 308!

Well one you might consider is the .260 remington, reachs out to 1000+ with no problems and very little recoil. Theres a good read on it at demigodllc.com "the case for the .260 remington". I have two at the moment and one on order. blue

I know a guy that shoots the 260, he kicks major butt with that thing! It's got the same ballistics as the 6.5/284 but does not seem to be as bad on barrels, go figure...
The advantage that I hope to have with the 300WM is less adjustment for wind with a heavier bullet. The 6.5/284 and the 260 both shoot the 6.5 bullet at 139 or 142 grains typically. I'm going to try 168, 175 and 200 grain bullets with the 300WM. The 168 and 175's should be going as fast or faster than the 142 that I shoot in my 6.5... The wind will surely be less of a factor......

i'll have to look into that 260 rem will it work in a long action ? i just hate to it being left behind when i go to the range

A 6mmBr 1 in 8 twist would be just perfect for 300 & 600 yards with 105-107gr bullets. They have great barrel life not like the 6.5X284 I have shot out (2) barrels already on my 6.5X284 one went only 600 round the other 750 rounds. The 6mmBR will shoot as well or better and have over 3000 rounds barrel life.

Stick with your 300 Win Mag...and use 208 AMax's with H4831 or Retumbo. Works rather well in mine to 1200 yds.

Going with a slower burning powder is easier on the shoulder than one would think....more of a push than a whack! :)

I like this. Threading a barrel for a muzzle brake doesn't cost too much. If not then I vote for a .260

I just put a break on my 300wm and I love it, light recoil and NO muzzle jump. If it were me I would keep it a 300.

i would get a brake for it but i read somewhere that brakes are not allowed in f-class shooting which is what the end result needs to be.

I assume you want to shoot F-open then? As F-T/R needs to be a .308 or .223.

I shot my first 600 yard F-open shoot a month back with a 6-BR and on my first target shot a 198 with 9x's. (The wind changed on my last two shots, I held off but not enough). On the same relay there was 2-200's shot, one with a 6.5 x 47 and the other I think was a 6-BR. Both Savages.

Next time I plan to be shooting a 308 in the T/R class. Our range will have 1k yards soon, looking forward to trying both guns at that.
