I just picked up a Savage model 11 7mm-08 barrel for a good price. It looked like it had sights but someone removed them and put in plugs. The barrel is 22" long and I check the twist. I came up with 9 1/2 twist. can anyone give more info? year?thanks..

If it is 9.5 twist, it's an older barrel. Savage/Stevens barrels are now 11 twist. The 9.5 twist is more desireable because of it's ability to handle heavier bullets like the 162 grain.

Yes and no. Savage originally used a 9-1/2" twist in the 7mm-08, like nearly every other maker. Then, for some unknown reason, they went to an 11-1/2" twist for a few years beginning about 2007. Finally, for 2011 they have gone back to a 9-1/2" twist, which as GaCop noted, is far more versatile in handling bullet weights of 140 gr and above.

I have an 2008 Model 16 in 7 mm-08 that came with the (undesirable) 11-1/2" twist and that caused me to have SSS rebarrel it. If I had only known before I bought it. :(

Thanks for the info.So they introduce the 11.5 twist in 2007, so I guess i have an older barrel then.

Good to know, I had no idea they've gone back to the 9.5 twist. Good move.
