112 Series J

So talk to me about 112 Series J single shots. I have a single shot 22-250 series J. What's different about them. I am told it's not a short action and it's not a long action. Is the screw spacing different too? If I were to build on it would I have to get a short action stock or long action stock? Are these any better or worse than a standard Savage action?

They are an intermediate action. As you said, not short and not long. They can be a pain to find stocks for. They are no better or worse of an action than any other savage/stevens except for the locating of a stock.

EGW makes a great one piece mount for the J's too.

I have the EGW on mine, I also got the Prairie Dog Special/Tactical from Stockade rifle stocks, they only charged $20 extra to inlet for the action.

The single-shot Savage 112V Series J has got to be one of the best prairie dog rifles ever made.

My first one was in 220 Swift.

Good stuff to know. I was wondering if it was a good rifle or if it was a red headed step child of Savage. I am thinking about building something on it. But I am having a tough time deciding what to build. 7WSM, Something in 6.5 or maybe even a 338 edge.

The J action differs only in action length. The stocks fit my paws like a glove and most shoot good to great as is. If you stay with the .473 head its an easy barrel swap. Not really collector items but for some reason I prefer to keep them low hassle doggin guns.

Looked for a "LONG" time for a one piece Leupold type base for my "J" but couldn't find one. Had one "custom" made. Cut two mounts, fitted and welded into a one piece with the rear windage adjustment. And it fits "all" the holes in the action without sticking out on either end or covering the chamber port.
Sometimes you just have to build what you want. 8)

Have a couple of the rear windage one piece bases for the Js, not sure where they came from as they where on the guns when bought used. Have since replace most of them with 20MOA EGW bases to get more MOA out of them.

I don't know what kind of base is on mine. It too was with the gun when I bought it. The only marking I can find without taking it of is a circle with an R in it. It does stick over the chamber port on both ends about 1/4" but nothing too get too worked up about. I guess it's got a rear windage adjustment in that there is a screw on each side of the base. And if you want to slide the base over one way or the other you loosen one screw and tighten the other. (Leupold STD Mount?) The rings that are on it are Burris signature series rings with the inserts. I figured if I needed more elevation out of the rings/base setup I could put in offset inserts.

I owned a 112V SS S Single Shot Stainless heavy barrel with a 6-24 Tasco mounted on top back in the late 70's early 90's in triple duce. 222. Finest most accurate rifle I ever owned. Dead Prairie dogs {feeding the eagles} were history in the making. I had a two hundred yard group {Wyoming wind} of less than the diameter of a nickel. Longest shot ever, 325 walked off yards. I sold it to a guy in Texas and wish I had it back. The 112 V SS S at that time had the blind mag and the long action, same for a 222 as a HHH cartridge. When you dropped the 222 into the top hole in the receiver it disappeared.
