ok guys i have not been on here in a while. I recently started thinking about tearing my favorite gun (16 .243) down and bedding the action. It shoots great already but am just wanting to do more. Is there anything wrong with over the counter epoxy and does anyone have a link to a similiar bedding job? also what is the benefits of fluting a bolt or is it just cosmetic? thanks

I have used JB weld a few times, but from now on I will use either marine tex.
I have used marinetex before and it works well.

A lot of people use other epoxies.

Fluting a bolt is cosmetic or cuts weight.

I've used bedrock glass, acraglass, and devcon. By far the devcon is the best and easiest to work with and it doesn't shrink when set. YMMV

+1 on Devcon steel putty. It mixes easily, is thick enough that it stays where you put it prior to dropping in the action and it sets up in about 16 hours.

I've read good reports on Marine Tex but personally have never used it.

I am also interested in the OP's question about bolt fluting. Is there a benefit to it or is it cosmetic? If it's just cosmetic I might going with a simple jewel on the bolt. Easier cheaper and I can do it myself.

I ordered some deacon from midway. I got the tubes. 2 oz I believe I read I need to let it set a bit before applying to let it thicken. Anyone have a link to a detailed beddig job on a savage? Hoping to bed next weekend and I also ordered a neck sizer so I can quit full length sizing.

The best reason to use Devcon, is the shrinkage rate...as far as i can find, it has one of the smallest percentage of shrinkage there is..and that is the whole reason behind a bedding job...that the bedding is a mirror image of the action/recoil lug. In the picture below, you can see the dimple behind the frt action bolt, and the marks in the bottom of the reciever stamped by Savage/Stevens....rsbhunter

That looks good. I need some detail like do you thread all thread into the action holes and how do you secure the barreled action to the stock? And what do use to block out the detachable mag area?

I buy Devcon at Grainger's and the clay at a craft supply. I don't know about the fluting. There is a great article on bedding at 6mmbr.com

As to bolt fluting, i can tell you , DON'T get spiral fluting...just got my bolt body back from being done, and it binds bad!!!!!!!!!! Freds at SSS works great, and i had 2 done at SSS, 1 done at somewhere else...never again....probably cost me a new bolt body.....live and learn....rsbhunter
