Got a Savage model 16 in 204 ruger that was shooting great until 2 days ago, Ran a bore scope and found alot of ugly. Which barrel would you guys select ? Its a carry gun I use for coyotes and fox so I don't want a huge bull bbl. Thanks in advance

Looks like when they rifled the bore, a chip or something got caught and put a gouge about 1 1/2 inches long half way out the pipe. Looks deep can't tell with the bore scope, but it is ugly ! Buddy of mine has been a smith for a long time and when he saw it , He used some words I've never heard a guy his age use LOL

If that gouge was there from the git go, why did it all of a sudden quit shooting?
Don't ever judge how a rifle will shoot from looking at what the bore looks like, it will fool you in a big way.
If it shot good before with a gouge, I would suspect something else is wrong. First thing I would check is the scope.

I will swap out the scope and try but I doubt thats it, Can't believe it would be that scope. Zeiss 6.5 - 20 thats only 1.5 years old and has only been on two different 204's. But I guess it could happen

I'm with sharpshooter. If it shot well a few days ago, something must have changed. Did you recently clean it? If the bore is that rough, maybe it shoots better with a dirty barrel? ???

My most accurate barrel (custom or factory) is a factory LRPV 22-250 barrel. The bore has chatter marks all through the barrel, but it's an honest .25" gun with the right loads and shooter.

Changed scope and went out this am. Yep this pipe is dead ! What used to cut a single ragged hole now puts 5 in the size of a quarter ! Now do I put a 204 pipe back on it or go 223 since I have unlimited LC brass ?

If you have lots of LC brass, and already have existing .20 cal bullets, gear, etc. why not something like a .20 Practical - .223 Rem necked down to .20 cal. Maybe slightly less zippy than a straight .204R, but gives you (more or less) the best of both worlds.

Before you make a tomato stake out of that "dead pipe", why don't you cut 1 1/2" off & try it ? ;)

Probably because the barrel doesn't have enough "meat" at the breech end to be set back. Most Savage barrels I've seen seem to start their taper right past the threads; there is not a 3-5" shank with no taper like on most barrels for Rems, etc.

I believe he was talking about cutting the little end.

I believe he was talking about cutting the little end.
then he would only be cutting 1/2"
the 1.5" is to get a new chamber and past the first part of flame erosion

Didn't he state that the 1 1/2 was half way down the tube. Kinda hard to cut that out of the middle and glue the two halves together. ;D ;D ;D

seriously tho, could cut the gouge off and build a pistol out of it.

LMAO Yes, the gouge is about the middle of the pipe LOL. Tossing the idea of another 20 cal other than the 204. When this would shoot one ragged hole it was my favorite. Now it's just sitting waiting a rebirth.
