Found it.

The Hornet cartridge for the Savage 10/11/12/16 rifle.

5.7 x 28mm FN

Looks like a miniature 221 Fireball.

Case length is 1.135 inches. COAL is 1.525 inches.

Holds about 7.5 grains of powder.

From a pistol barrel (4-3/4 inch) gives about 1,700 fps with a 40-grain bullet.

From a rifle barrel ought to get above 2,000 fps.

VERY COOL!!

There was a guy here on the forum trying to do this with a wildcat not too long ago......

I'll have to do some research on it.

One of our local FFLs just bought one for her CCW. I didn't understand why she wanted that particular cartridge for defensive use but it's her choice.

I never thought about chambering a rifle in that.

The 5.7x28 is a very neat little round and not as costly as one would think. They seem to be very accurate given the FiveseveN (what FN calls the pistol) is accurate to 100 yards with open sights. The actual groups sizes were surprising. The round is very fast for it's size. I know several people that have it in T/C handguns and love it. It should do well for what you want and a box of 50 rounds runs $20, not bad.

I have looked at the spent rounds and thought what a cool .20 or 17 wildcat it would make

Been kicking the 5.7x28 around for a while now?? Have a few hundred peices if range brass and finding more all the time. Would necking it down to 17 would make it a reloadable 17HMR?
Found another neat use for the little case too, gotta read down the page a little till you get to pics. http://www.longrangehunting.com/forums/f84/mule-deer-hunt-47581/

Bet it'd work real good in a 20 inch barrel.

Best I can tell, the case rim diameter is .307. Does some one make a bolt head for it?

Some one needs to build a .20 or .17 Wild Cat based on it. CRRRRRAAACKKKK!!! I bet it would be an awsome almost 200yd. varm cartridge.

HAHA. . . I know someone who has already been pondering this for close to a year, and he is the one to build one too. . ..

Where can you find ammo?

Not sure about general availability of this ammo, but a local dealer tells me he has sold half-dozen guns chambered for this round just this month.

The place I work part time always has stacks of it and it moves quickly

Pickt up a box of 5.7x28 ammo and I aint even got a gun to shoot it in ::) Was checking to see what it would work in hoping it might work in a 93 17HMR action, it would fit the magazine for size but not length :-\ Next I tryed it in a single shot Savage, its too small and will not ramp into the chamber :'( Tryed the little CZ next and if a guy bushed the bolt and redid the mag a little it might just work 8)
The easiest solution might be to rechamber a 17HMR TC ancore barrel? Would make a great little carry gun but dang I hate breaking the sight pickture to reload!

I picked up a spent shell at the range the other day and matched it to a 20 VT. Wow for a center fire it sure is small. Since it was only a shell I have no idea what the bullet would weigh. It looks like it COULD be a real fun cartridge to work with and one pound of powder should go a looooong way. Does anyone have any load data?

The Lyman 49th Reloading Manual has loads for 35, 40, and 45 grain bullets.

The powder charges range from 4.3 to 7.5 grains of powder.

Velocities from a 4-3/4 pistol barrel range from 1400 to 1800 fps.

20 rounds in a pistol is always a great thing. The recoil is minimal also which is good for most women shooters.

The biggest complaint I have is that the energy levels are about the same as a 22 magnum. Not saying 22 magnum is a slouch but the 5.7 gets hyped up to a point that you would think it is much stronger than what it is. The Grendel pistol in 22 magnum is comparable and has even more rounds at 30.

In a rifle I think it would be neat but there are a few other loadings that would work just as good. Now if you had a Five Seven pistol and a PS90 (or even better, a P90) then having a bolt gun in the round would make all kinds of sense. I believe in having ammunition commonality among all my firearms and right now I have 223, 9mm, recently added 45ACP and of course 22lr.

I too believe in having multiple rifles or handguns in each cartridge.

Thank you Hammer. Santa has the 49th in his bag I hope. Now all I have to do is find a bolt head that it will work with. Fred are you listening?
