In need of some input fellas....

Good friend of mine has a Remmy Model 7 243 Win. with a 20" barrel. I'm looking to load up some 70g Noslers for him. In the past, I loaded 55g Blitzkings with Varget but that created a huge fireball and accuracy was only so-so.

Do any of you have a go to powder for a short barreled 243 Win. using 70g bullets? Most of the powders I have on hand are Hodgdon or IMR variety although I do keep R-15 on the shelf.

Thanks in advance!

Hi you need faster burning than varget so I would go with 40gr of H4895 or 40gr of benchmark as a starting point.

Varget is too slow for a 55 gr bullet.
You should see it in a 22-250 with 55 gr bullets.
QB shows a 97% burn.

Better for a 70 gr bullet and shows a 99% burn.

RL15 is just a tad better with a 99.2% burn.

You will probably have to go to RL10x or that speed to get a complete burn but it
will cut your FPS a good bit like 50-75 fps. 10X shows a 100% burn.

Loadata shows 36.5 as a max for a speer 70 gr HP. Please work up.

I am loading 80 gr barnes TTSX bullets over RL17 for our 243 BLR with an 18" barrel
and I have yet to see any fire works, but I have not shot it at dusk/dawn.

Thanks guys! I happen to have about 3/4 pound R-10x not being used at the moment.

I'll give that a try first and if that doesn't float my boat, I'll move to H4895.

Yep, the Varget and 55 Blitzking combo would throw about 4 foot flames out the barrel. It was even more impressive in low light!

Hey Trappst there's not much data if any for your application, so from what I have gathered my starting point would be 38gr of 10x and go from there.

how about Imr4064, it throws them 70's pretty good from a 22" barrel

My 243 striker makes a fireball about 2' diameter with the muzzle brake on with varget. Accurate 2230 makes about a 1' fireball. But, it does look cool and I never had so much fun shooting a pistol.

keeki,

I use IMR 4064 in my in laws Savage 243 and Remmy 700 6mm Rem. Both shoot extremely well but they also have longer barrels. Not sure it would work real well in the short 20" barrel.

Got some rounds loaded last night with R-10x. Velocity isn't a big deal with this one so I'll just be looking for acceptable accuracy.

Max load will be more like 36.5 of 10X. Just saying for safeties sake.

Yep, yep, I used 36.5g R-10x as max. Set the bullet at a generic .020" off the lands and loaded up about 20 rounds. I didn't drop the charge too much as I'm not interested in a mild load.

Not to mention the trigger on that rifle is awful and it's not much fun to shoot. Plus, I pushed a couple patches through the barrel and I'm pretty sure I jumped a rabbit out of it! ;)
