F class scope

Hey Guys,

what would be a good scope to mate to an F/TR for F class matches ? I have been looking at some sweet Nightforce scopes, any suggestions ?

I started out w/ a Bushnell 4200 Elite 30mm 6-24x mildot 50mm and found after I got the hang of it, I could use a thinner reticle and more magnification. I bit the bullet and bought a Nightforce BR 8-32x N2DD and couldn't be happier. That reticle is very uncluttered and allows you to see the mirage, conditions, and aim more precisly. No doubt it improved my shooting/ score.

Nightforce, unless you have some $ to burn, then a march 10-60X.
Supposedly the march scopes are so clear you can see hits at 1000 yards.

I might get one when I hit the lotto. Price is about 3G.

You will be happy with a Weaver T-36. It has the best adjustment system bar none. They run around $400 and have a life time warranty.

Tammons- Ian Kelby of Kelby's custom rifles- As in Stolle Panda actions was at an F class match that I shot in about a month ago. He brought a few of the March scopes. They are unbelievable in every way, Clairity, Magnification- 10-60x and price!

Brand is not as important as features. You want something that has great clarity, good eye relief, repeatable adjustments, a reticle you really like, and plenty of internal adjustment. You will need to know how much moa you will need at the distances you'll shoot, then buy a scope that can click out that far.

Also, I would recommend that rather than spending the money on a super scope, you should put it towards a good prone mat and good front and rear rests. A good spotting scope and stand for scoring will also be needed. If you already have that stuff then by all means get the March, Nightforce, Schmidt & Bender, etc.

I have a good spotting scope, as for shooting mat I use a Walmart tarp ;D

I plan to shoot F/TR so I can only use a bipod in front, right ? I have a Harris bipod and a rear bag

If I put a good 300 yard zero on the model 12 F/TR how much adjustment would I need for 175 gr match .308 to go up for 1000 yards ?

You will need to come up about 34 inches from a 300 yard zero.

I have a 6.5x20 Leupold VX3 that I use right now but I don't have the target turrets or a good reticle (just the duplex) so I'm buying a NightForce NXS 5.5-22x50 with the NP-R1 reticle and .25 MOA knobs this week. The NP-R1 is scaled with 1 MOA hashmarks vertically and 2 MOA horizontally so they bracket the 40" bull perfectly at 1000 yards.

I bit the bullet also, and yes, everything above is correct. It will make you a better shooter. The two fine dots are tough, I had to learn how to use this scope as I have always had crosshairs! But the more I use it, the more I learn about it and love it! Very precise!

Theres a NIB one on 6mmbr and on Benchrest.com for sale for $1100 shipped. It dosen't much less exp. than that. In fact, if I had the $, I would buy it now to put on my .223 AI and sell the Nikon FCH dot that is on there. They are really that good.

What do you recommend as far as shooting mats and front and rear rests ? Do you think the Weaver T 36 recommended by Dirk will be adequate until I get up to speed with F class matches ?

the only problem with that FIXED power Weaver is possibly mirage. You can't turn the power down. I shoot a Night Force 12-42 and sometimes find it necessary to turn the power down below 30. I have a Weaver T24 and love it also.

I'm leaning toward the variable NightForce NXS 5.5-22x50 with the NP-R2 reticle as I see it to be the best compromise for shooting 300,600,800,900 and 1000 yards. :-*

JCalhoun when the weigh the gear for F/TR is the front bag/bipod and rear bag weight counted in for the 18.15 lb weight limit ??

The bi-pod is, the rear bag isn't.
Here is the rule from the NRA rule book....

(b) F-Class Target Rifle (F-TR) - A rifle restricted to the chambers of unmodified .308 Winchester/7.62mm
NATO or unmodified .223 Remington/5.56mm X 45 NATO cartridge cases. The rifle must be fired off a
bipod, rigidly attached to the rifle’s for-end, and/or a sling. Any bipod, meeting the definition of a bipod,
may be used but its weight must be included in the rifle’s overall weight. Any safe, manually operated
trigger is permitted. Any sighting system is permitted, but it must be included in the rifle’s overall weight.
The provisions of Rules 3.16 and 3.16.1 apply to this definition.
(1) The rifle’s overall weight, including all attachments such as sights, sling and bipod, must not exceed
8.25 kilograms (approximately 18.18 pounds. An “attachment” also includes any external object, other
than the competitor and apparel, which recoils or partially recoils with the rifle, or which is clamped,
held, or joined in any way to the rifle for each shot, or which even slightly raises with the lifting of the
rifle from its rest/firing point.
(2) The rifle must be fired in the prone position from the shoulder of the competitor using rifle as defined in
3.4.1(b).

The NXS will cost you around $500.00 more than the Benchrest and be 1/4 MOA adjustment instead of the Benchrest 1/8 MOA adjustment. I'd consider the Benchrest over the NSX since those targets aren't firing back and if you're not dragging it thru the ditch.
Just my thoughts. Check Longrangesupply.com That's the best deal I could find when I got my 12-42 Benchrest.

Underneath the caps of the benchrest models are the turrets marked with numbers and scales like on the NXS models?
