You will not be able to do a 6.5/284 because the diameter of a 6.5 is 0.5 smaller than a 7mm. Another cartridge to consider is the 7WSM. You would need to change bolt heads but it would work. 7mm Dakota, & Remington mag. 7 wsm would be my choice.

How do you know that?? can you see it on a fired case?? It can't be that bad that you can't clean it up with a finish reamer!!

Even with a new magnum size bolt head most of those cartridges won't work because they need a long action and the 7-08 uses a short action.

The 7mm WSM would fit the short action but Savage builds them on a large shank, probably for good reason.

A 7 mm AI may allow the chamber to be cleaned up and no other changes would be needed.

I have a 7mm WSM benchmark barrel on a small shank action and there's no problem at all with it ;D

Stangfish,
Maybe it's just me, but it seems that it would be nearly impossible to put a blemish in the chamber at that location with a headspace gauge. It would be hard to make the gauge sit at enough of an angle to do it. Unless your gauge is shaped differently from an that I've ever used. You sure that's not from a manufacturing defect in the chamber?

I'd certainly like to know how you think you did that........

Unless you were spinning the headspace gauge in the chamber, i dpn't see how you could do that either???? rsbhunter

A chamber reamer with a bad dull cutting edge could cause the galling imprint you see on your case, I don't think you could spin the headspace gauge fast enough closing the bolt to do that kind of damage. ;)

Re chamber to a 284Win and call it good. No need for a new bolt head and a little tweaking of the Mag feed lips and it will feed from the mag. The 284 reamer will clean up the 7-08 chamber no problems head space and shoot it.
