Lets see; I already have a 7x57, a .35 whelen and a .308. What next? maybe a .338-06? or a .338 federal.
Decisions, decisions. Aint life grand? Dont really need any one of them, but you know how it is. All three of my A&B barrels have been excellent shooters accuracy wise. Less than MOA and for what I use them for that is more than adequat, minute of deer.

$130- Wow, at that price I need more. Can't buy blanks for that. almost think ya could cut the 7-08 chamber shorter and rechamber to 7br... 7x57AI... 280AI... .221 fireball 14 twist could become most anything for light bullets.
The first 5 I got all shoot under 1"@100yds.

Gonna get one my self and do it.......just to have another option in barrels.

You can find 338 winmag barrels for sale occasionally.

I reamed an A+B 338 fed to a 338/284. That was before the 338 RCM came out.

With a minor setback you can ream a 338 fed barrel to the 338 RCM.

Been thinking about doing that, but I have about 80-90 rounds of loaded 338/284, 160 TSX, 210 TSX and 250 GK and its about equal with a 338-06, so I think I will shoot them out first.

Might take a while.

What bolt head would you use? Standard magnum or WSM?

Normal magnum I think.
I have 180 rounds of 1X 338 RCM brass so I could measure if you want.

Also I will add, if you run through case volumes in Quickload the 338/284 which nobody is really interested in is 67.5 gr of h2o. Just thought I would throw it in there.

The 338-06 is almost 71.
The 338 RCM is 72 so not that far ahead fo the 338-06. It runs at 63k and the 338-06 runs at
65k.

The 338 win mag holds 86 gr of h20 and runs at 62.5k
Also you are not going to be able to reach the RCM factory numbers due to their special powder.

I set up the 338/284 at the time because I had all short actions. Its a good cartridge and will do anything I need it to, without magnum recoil. That said, if I would have had a long action at the time I would have set up a 338-06 or a 338 winmag.
Now I have a long control feed action so I dont know whats next.


The ideal round I would like to have is a 338-375 ruger which I guess would be close to a 338 RUM.

Savage has piqued my interest because I'd like to build a switch-barrel rifle - 260 Rem, 300 WSM and 338 RCM. Blued or SS makes no difference to me as I'd teflon whatever I built as I have in the past.

I've done some nosing around and found some interesting info, such as the fact that the bolt head can be changed out, which added to my interest.

I was at a shop yesterday and they had several Savages. Notably a 14 Amer Classic in 308, and another in 14 Amer Classic 300 WSM, Both new and both priced right. The other gun that I looked at was a 16, but I have not yet found any catalog info on it - syn stock, SS, big bolt handle, DMB, 22-250 w/fluted barrel. Not sure what limitations, if any, there are to the Amer Classic.

The only limitation is that it is a short action, which limits your OAL.

Probably fine for your 260, but may limit you with the 300wsm and 338rcm.
