Why is it that no one has developed the 308AI especially since the 243-260 and 7-08 have all greatly benefited from this mod, and the fact that they are all in the same cartridge "family" it would just seem to make sense.

It is there, the gain is so small with the heavy .308 bullets, most just move to another of the 308 based rounds

I see you have a 3006 AI how much did you gain over standard version?

50fps with 150 gr bullets lol but cases look cool and a neck sizer will work to size them.

Is the 308 gain even less than 50fps, even so the 308 is so popular and with they amount of fanatics out there who will take any gain there is, you would think it would be more abundant.

Only real reason for it in the .308 based cartridges is the increased brass life. The normal case lacks enough taper to provide substantial gains when "improving." The only real capacity gain is in the shoulder area. I'd do it for brass life and burn efficiency, the velocity gain would be marginal.

BTW,
When you get yours done please report back as to the differences between the two... ;) ;D

While P.O. Ackley never did an improved version of the .308, it is rumored that he did play around with the idea of Improving the .308. I am a huge fan of the .308 (Have 4 of them) and always wondered what if? Simple thing to have a reamer made and find out.

I had a buddy of mine in Santa Marie CA order a reamer with the only change being the Ackley shoulder at 40º. I had a pretty new .300 Win Mag Savage 110 BA, I had him set the barrel back and we rechambered it to the .308 AI that P.O. never built. We built this rifle as Ackley would have were it would accept a factory .308 Cartridge and they only needed fireforming to have the new cases.

As has been mentioned here the .308 doesn't have enough taper to gain a lot by going the Improved route. That may just be the reason why Mr. Ackley never did one, just not a lot to gain. The 40º shoulder does give a smidgen more room for powder. In the end what I gained by doing this fantasy round was right at 150FPS, not bad really all things considered. It shoot's some amount flatter but not a lot to right home about. The 110 BA is a great rifle and it shoots great but I don't know if I really gained anything in the end, but a unique rifle in a somewhat unique chambering.
