.

Deer used to be taken routinely with a 30-30, but the new genetically-engineered, steroid-pumped deer need a 338/378 with premium 250-grainers at a minimum.

A similar thing is happening to prairie dogs.

What with genetic engineering by the ranchers along with new vitamin mineral supplements and aerobic/aerobatic exercises and the advanced-placement courses in prairie dog town theory.

I think the new minimum for prairie doggin' will be the 257 Weatherby, but would not have a strong argument against the 264 Win Mag.

Then there is something to be said for the 7mm STW with 175 grain spitzer-boattails.

What shall we do with all the old 22 calibers and sub-calibers ?

I dont care what anyone says about deer, there is no better deer cartridge than the 25-06. Since switching to one, i now know why 25 fanatics are fanatics, its like shooting deer with a bolt of lightning.

you're right Hammer! Last year I hit one with a 120gr NBT out of my 260 and it was able to make it back into the hole...................................course it was airlifted into the air about 5 ft, then swished into the hole though...LOL

Back in the days before the Zombie Prairie Dog Apocalypse, sure. But now that they're blood-crazed killers bend on our destruction, you need serious firepower.

From left to right......

22-250 Good all around varmint round, high velocity but not enough power factor for the bull prarie dog.

50BMG capable of making clean kills on prarie dogs at very close range.

40MM Now we're talking! PD round for the 21st century.

Unless that 40mm is API it's just gonna bounce off! DU is the only way to roll.

To think I used to think the 300 weatherby was enough gun... my foolish youth I suppose. Back to the drawing board for me!

It's a solid bronze 14,000gr projectile, should penetrate the first couple inches of PD flesh but I dont know if it will bust bone or not!

Overkill can be effective. I buddy of mine went after a mosquito with a 20 ga one time. I told him he was using the wrong shot size, but I think it worked. One the other hand, I went shooting once after foolishly pulling on the same jeans I had worn at a crab feast the night before. Naturally, I drew flies. One particularly obnoxious one landed on the ground, so I decided to shoot him with a Ruger Super Blackhawk. The sights are so high it's hard to shoot something from a couple of feet so I just held a little high. The fly disappeared but a few minutes later I saw him crawl up out of the hole and buzz off, a little wobbly I think. He did stop bothering me.

My 300RUM works OK as long as I use 180g or heavier bullets.
