Recoil Lug size

Going to get a different recoil lug....have been looking at a .25, but have also seen a .5. What are the advantages/disadvantages of going with the larger one?

getting it to fit. Have that much extra threads? room in the stock?

the problem with recoil lugs thicker than than 0.25 in is that your stock may not fit it.
