Sounds good. Might I suggest the grooves in the handle be cut just a bit shallower? Might be easier on the fingers yet still give a good grip.

Tom

First thing I thought about when I saw that handle was to slip a couple of rubber "O" rings in the groves. I think that would give a good grip and lessen the sharpness of the grove. I want a couple!

You might let us know how the O-rings work out. btw if you want to try some different o-rings, Caterpillar has some silicone o-rings of much larger profiles than the standard Viton/neoprene variety.

I like the idea! Would prefer a smooth handle similar to the SSS design. Also, how about a stainless offering? Then the user can adjust the finish from high polish all the way back to bead blasted & not fear rust. Variances in body chemistry can play havoc on uncoated steel. Keep the creative juices flowing Boots! You're doing great. Dale

When you have some ready for sale, post them in the classifieds. Looks like you have a promising side job.

On the factory bolt handles, many have threaded then and not had problems. The problem with threading factory bolt handles is many of them have voids, and if you hit that void they just turn to crap. I Believe that SSS figured the void rate to be 1 in 5. The original SSS bolt handle was a threaded nob on a factory bolt handle. I believe that that is the way that Stockade is still doing them. Actually through the years, they has been several members that have made and sold bolt handles.

Here is a picture of one that a member made for me, (dcloco) he was buying Callahan knobs from Midway when they would go on sale for $5 bucks, and he would turn the knob of the factory bolt handle down with a belt sander, and then thread it with a basic hand tap, he did many like this. They are the same length as the SSS handle, but they are much lighter.

There is many company's that sell knobs. (Just Goggle Tactical bolt knob.)

Here is another picture of a knob that a member sold on this site. This was a Spook handle, he did the same threaded a factory bolt handle, and turned a knob on his lath. The handle was very nice, but even though I requested it to be made out of aluminum, it was very heavy, I would have hatted to see what a steel one weighed. The main thing on these handles is to keep them light, especially with an accu-trigger.

That is very similar to the one I bought from a forum member a couple of years ago. His were threaded and required the cut bolt handle to be tapped. I drilled out the threaded area a bit and epoxied the handle on.

When it comes to knurling on a cnc machine you bring in the knurl and manually knurl it and resume your finish operation.I hope this helps.

Well guys I did a lil R&D and took some suggestions and made two new style prototypes. One that is perfectly smoothed and another with much shallower grooves. I must say I like the smooth handle the best so far, but I think the original handle with the deeper grooves would be great for hunting with gloves. The shallow grooved handle does feel good as well and isn't as prominent, but neither the original nor the shallow grooved "grab" at your fingers or seem like they will rough you up or anything.

I was also thinking about the O-ring idea and got to thinking what if the consumer finished it with Plastic-Dip coating. Just a thought.

As Pat stated in his about post weight is an issue and these are about the same as a BT. I installed one of the first ones on my lightest accutrigger (got it set at just below 1lb.) and I couldn't get it to false-trip the accutrigger. I also tried it on a 3-screw. I set the 3-screw with a sporter handle, going lighter and lighter until I could get the sporter to false-trip the trigger, then I went heavier just a bit to where it was safe with the sporter handle. Without any further adjustment I installed my handle and could only get it to trip if I slammed it down harder than anyone ever should. Those are just two tests and different guns may act different.

I am working on making this thing a reality, but there are a few hurdles to jump and a couple things to check into, but I am trying my best so please be patient :).

As soon as I get the camera working again (or buy a new one) I'll get some pics up of the new styles. I'll keep you all up to speed as things develop.

I would like to see one made of stainless. It could then be TIG welded (for those of us with that capability) instead of glued as long as the original bolt handle was also made of stainless.

Alright guys, good news. Got a couple of green lights on this project. It's getting really really close. I am gonna post up some pics here tonite, now that I got a good camera going now, of all three designs. I am also working up some options for you guys. I know SS handles have been requested and at this time IF I can do them it will be special order kind of a deal, but we will see if I can even do them. I am going to do a trial run of a limited number of handles of all three current styles. If they work out well then we will step this up a level, if not then that will be it. I have already made a few handles to have in stock (I figured if this whole thing didn't work out I'd keep them and use them myself ;) ). I am going to try and put up some pics of the handles on guns, unfortunatly I only had 2 sporter donor handles and I mounted just the two in my 1st pic so that is the only handle I will be able to show on a gun, but it should give you guys the idea. So more to come, keep watching.

Here are some more pics of all three designs and the first design mounted on two different guns.

Original, Shallow Grooved, and Smooth Handles, ready to mount into your donor sporter handle.
I picked the three with the most scratches in the surface finish for this picture so I could be as honest as possible. None of the scratches on these three would even faintly show up with paint or duracoat, but like I said I'd rather be overly honest than not.

Thanks,

Doug

At this time I will not being doing the conversions, that is too be left up to you. Be I am going to include a set of instructions, and materials list. If you have basic around the house tools for the most part you can do this. the three biggest tools needed are a vice, an abrasive cutting disc type tool (die grinder w/disc, or angle grinder with thin disk), and I would recommend a drill press with vice, but it can be done with a hand drill. No sign up list yet, I will post an ad in the classifieds here shortly.

I am still working on that one. I don't wanna give em away but I dont wanna overcharge either, and since this is a DIY kinda thing that has to be taken into concideration.
