my dad just got a BVSS in a 6.5x284 and we were out shooting it today. It is a centerfeed and so far it has worked flawlessly.

Biggun, thanks for the reply, do you know if the "centerfeed " magazine for the 270 is the same as the 6.5x284, or if it will work when i convert it? rsbhunter

My Savage 12 F Class was (before rechambering) a 6.5x284 and its a centerfeed action

The .284 is a short action cartridge and may or may not work in the .270 magazine. I doubt it.

If you want a 6.5x284 to be a repeater then it will need to be a long action. As far as if it will feed from your mag, probably not. You will most likely have to play with the feed lips and maybe even file some off as the .284 case is much fatter.

So, if i understand it, Savage does make a centerfeed mag that is designed to hold and feed the 6.5x284 case. Everything i have researched says that i need to use a long action for this build, as unfired rounds would need removal of the bolt to eject the round. According to specs, the body is .030 bigger in dia.(at the web of the case) and the head size is the same at .473 (rebated rim). I guess i need to get a 6.5x284 case and see what needs to be done to get it to feed, if possible from the stock magazine. At the worst, i'll contact Savage and see if i can buy the right magazine to install in the stock......Thanks for the help.....rsbhunter

I rebarreled a centerfeed 06 to 6.5-284 and put it in a Boyds thumbhole varmet and it a blind mag setup. It feeds great but a real pain to load three round in to hunt with. The nice thing is I have never had to use a follow up shot. It's a great round and so far DRT when it goes off. Good Luck, Idahojoe

I have a Model 112 with a McGowen 6.5X284 PM barrel. It feeds just fine from both the blind mag and hinged floorplate stocks I have.

Thanks, i am really excited about this build, looking at either a krieger 26" sporter/medium contour 5R bbl, or possibly a CBI, or ????...i would like it to be light, would a sporter bbl be too light? As stated, hopefully it will be a one and done deal, so a heavy bull bbl won't be needed....any info, suggestions, or tips on the build...i have a ground lug, SSS trigger coming....Accuracy is #1, weight is #2...any thoughts would help...Thanks , rsbhunter

rsbhunter,
what stock are you looking at?

Stockys has a couple that might fit the build, was looking at the McMillan Edge, 22 oz's, but the price is the heavy part......although, a couple years ago i had built a Rem(i know, i knew not what i was doing) custom 300 RUM that shoots AWESOME....groups at 500 yds that normal rifles won't shoot at 100....so , spending the money can be worth it.....this might be my second "custom" looking at a Schneider p5, or a Krieger bbl (whats on my custom now)..already ordered the SSS trigger, recoil lug, bolt handle, and set up a date to have the action trued and timed......and the bolt body diamond fluted....now for how many $$$$$ i want to spend from here...and i thought when i bought it from Acadamy Sports for $179.00, that i was getting away cheap!!!!!!!!! rsbhunter ::)
