I have the opportunity to purchase a Savage 111 for $275. I feel like this is a great deal, but I'm not sure it will do what I want it to do for me, so that's why I come to you gentlemen. About the rifle:

-It's chambered in .270
-Has side-button magazine release synthetic stock with mag
-Comes with scope base

Here are some pictures lifted from the ad:

Now, all I really want to do to this rifle is rebuild it into a .308 as I'm already set up to reload for that caliber. I also want to replace the stock, but I have some concerns about the detachable magazine feature. Whether or not I'm still able to use a detachable magazine doesn't matter to me, I just need a better stock than the one it comes with from the factory. Will I be able to use a blind magazine with the 111 receiver?

Any information is greatly appreciated.

The cheapest Stevens I can get around here is $320 before taxes, and that's without a scope base. If I'm going to rebarrel either one, the 111 is looking like a pretty good deal.

Also, the guy said he'd install a blind mag for me, so I guess that puts an end to my fears about being able to find a stock.

Buy the 111, call Jim at Northland and order your barrel, then choose your stock.......if you decide not to buy it, let me know I would be interested in it (it's a good deal for a project gun.....at any rate!)

So it looks like I'm buying the bolt, trigger group, action, recoil lug, magazine parts, and barrel nut tomorrow morning. I'll poke my head back in here after I've played around with it for a while.

You do realize that Walmart carries Model 10s in .308 with the accu-trigger that are already blind mags and comes with scope and rings for $400? Yeah it's $125 more but the trigger is significantly better and you don't have to get another barrel. You may run into some feed problems with the long .270 magazine and the short .308 round as well, it may work fine but some people have had problems.

Half the fun is the project. Feed problems? Not at all.

A-rok, Academy is running an "unadvertized" special on Stevens # 200 in .270 or 7mm-08 for $179.00 The action is same as Savage 110. But w/ no accutrigger. I bought one of each friday. Plan to do just what you are doing. If you have a Academy store nearby & they're sold out, Call their C/S dept. in Katy, Tx & they will arrange delivery to your store from a stocking store. Good luck, Dale

If ya can get the Academy Sports special that would work great it is a center feed.
I had the 111 30-06 and rebuilt it with a blind mag. These parts came from Midway, I used.

I got one of the 270 specials from Academy Sports in Macon Ga last Thursday. They still had eight Stevens in stock, all 270s. I called yesterday afternoon to see how many the had left and the guy said "four".

I completely agree, but starting with a good platform goes a long way to preventing frustration and can save a lot of money in the mean time.
