about to violate a .223 barrel and turn it into a .220 swift AI. I already have a .223, .223AI 22-250, .22-250AI and a few 220 swifts.

bought a set of dies for $10- so I have to give it a try. ;)

I just looked at that on reloadersnest. Those are some screaming velocities! Let us know how that works out.

what kind of fps will you get from the swift AI

Blue Avenger

less then the .22-250AI
some of the powders will get a 50gr ballistic tip up to 3900fps
most powders will be in the 3750+ area with a 50 gr bullet.

Reloadernest was showing 55gr ballistic tips at over 4100fps! That's just sick.

.223 barrel....1 in 9 twist? More interesting to me would be 68 to 75 grain bullets with RL-22. 220 Swift A.I. should be close to the 22-6MM or 224 TTH.

You should chamber it for a 22/6mm AI. 75 gr AMax at 3900+ is F-U-N!!! :)

but I don't have them dies yet!

almost had a set of .22-06 dies

.

If you're not going with the original Swift...

And are going with an Ackley Improved case...

Would go with something like the 243 AI or 6mm AI necked down 22 caliber.

Swift cases are usually double the price of the other parent cases.

.22-6mm is on the list when I find a set of affordable dies. About the only one not on the list to try is Weatherbys attempt at a .224

Greg

I ran into case life problems when I did the 40 degree shoulder on the Swift case about twenty years ago. I barely got a velocity increase that was worth my time until I dropped to a 35 degree shoulder. I still was not happy so improved the 6Rem case and gave it a 30 degree shoulder. I liked it so well I had a reamer made. To date ( two years now) I have yet to loose a case.

Ch4d has 22-6mm dies for $78 and I just happen to have a spare 22-6mm barrel laying around

I just checked the Ackley Handbook on the Swift imp. Ackley said there is not enough velocity gain with the imp over the standard to make it worthwhile, unless it would be heavier bullets with slower powder. The main advantage would be better case life and improved feeding and extraction.

I done one once. It took 3 more grains of powder just retain the velocity I had before. After that, it just made more pressure and very little speed. It didn't feed any better, either.

if you already have this one all you need to get a 40 grainer going 4746 fps is some rl n 550
why do a 220 AI
