Model 25 in 5.7 x 28mm

according to Savage's website, the model 25 is now available in a few new calibers added to .223 and .204. they are .222, .22hornet, and 5.7 x 28mm. The 5.7 should be an intersting little round in a Savage rifle. Has anyone had any experience with that round in a rifle?

Nope - interesting but I don't want to be a guinea pig on it. Anyone make brass other than FN? Have heard it was coated with some type of something to help extraction etc. - might worry about that too.

Like the case design better, but might be tempted to go with the Hornet - about the same thing as far as performance.

Had a PS-90 and a 57. Always thought about having a spare .223 barrel set back and chambered for this round for my daughter.

On the one hand, I'm really unimpressed with the ammunition we're allowed to have. There would be little to no recoil and, alas, not a whole lot of excitement on the business end either. The cases are kinda tough to reload, they seem a little flimsy. It's a neat concept and I'd love to get me a bunch of SS190 armor piecing rounds to mess with but the squirrel piercing stuff they sell has about the same HP as a 22 mag at twice the price.

On the other hand, you can reload the stuff once you figure it out, Hopefully the bullet options will improve, and you'd most definitely be able to witness the demise of whatever vermin found itself in your cross-hairs, and it would seem perfect for my trigger happy 10 year old that burns through 17HMR like thay give it away.

you guys are probably right....would be more practical to just go with a .223 or .22 hornet, but the idea of the 5.7 being so much like a reloadable .17hmr just seems like a good time.

My thoughts on a dedicated bolt action rifle for this round are mixed. Don't know what kind of retail pricing the Model 25 will have but suspect I could buy an upper for my AR for same money. That would use a don't remember if its 50 or 100 round magazine mounted on top with ejection down through the AR-15 magazine well. Remove the follower and spring from a 30 round 223 magazine and you have a handy brass catcher for your empties. More I ponder the situation more I believe the AR upper is the better choice.

I'm not kicking the 5.7/28 caliber, have never seen one and know little about it. 17hmr and .22mag rimfire ammos are getting too expensive when I can reload a small centerfire for less.

Savage...why not offer .221fireball instead? Couldn't be any more expensive or as hard to find ammo as the 5.7/28. If the factory is going to pursue a fad (?), why not the .20 vartarg?

The .221fb is a breeze to load and brass is plentiful now-days. I am going to try some reduced blue dot loads in .221 fb, might be near the performance of the 5.7/28? Aren't the armor piercing rounds only military available?

Theoretically, they are Military and LE only. Armor piercing aside, what makes them neat is that they are really freakin fast considering the size they are packaged into. You can get them on GB, but people are seriously proud of them.

The sporting rounds that are readily available are slow compared to the premium stuff that FN promised the ATFE they would not sell to the general public. The rounds awesomeness lies in it's speed and the SS196 and SS197 rounds that are supposed to be the "public" rounds are heavier projectiles that don't really get going, defeating the original parameters of the cartridge design. Additionally, there is not really good access to super light projectiles that would allow one to roll your own. Basically we get the v-6 Mustang all tarted up to look like a Shelby GT 500.

..A neat little round is a 5.7 johnson..Necked down 30 cal carbine case...Atleast you can find the brass...

I really like the 221 Fireball that was mentioned earlier. I have a Model 16 that had the barrel set back and re-chambered to 221. It is a solid 1/2" shooter with either IMR4198 or IMR4227 and the 52 or 53 SMK's, The 4227 seems to be a little more consistent, but who is counting? I get easy 3000 fps with the 52 or 53 SMK's in a 20.5" barrel. Some people balk about the feeding and ejection of the little cases in the short action rifles. I will admit, it takes some getting used to. I hardly notice now. My 10 year old loads and shoots my 221 a lot! It is nothing to go through 50 rounds at a time. It is a great 250 yard coyote gun, and a great starter gun for young shooters getting trigger time. My favorite load is 12.5 grains of IMR4227 over a 52 HPBT SMK. Cases and bullets are easy to come by, it doesn't use much powder, no recoil, accurate, fairly low noise signature. Great fun!

Sorry for the derail here, but after doing a quick search I couldn't find it, how is the barrel installed& head spaced for the model 25? theoretically speaking, if a person was turning threads on the barrel blank, could they extend the threads& install the barrel with a scaled down version of the nut used on the 110& 10 series?
