I just got a 243 win in an 11 brb and plan to load 70 grain Sierra hollowpoints with B414. Does anyone have any experience or suggestions for this?

Looking at the latest Hornady manual (#8), The best powders for that bullet weight are IMR 4064, 4320, Win 760, VV N-160, H4350 and IMR 4831. H414 is not listed for the 70 grain.

The Sierra #5 manual shows Varget and 760 giving top velocity. 414 not listed. Powders listed in Hornady manual also showing as acceptable in the Sierra manual.

Hodgdon shows it on the web site but i have a can of 414 and have tried it in almost every thing i have and have never found it to be better (in my guns) and most of the time not as good as BLC-2. It is a ball powder and it seems to burn even dirtier that BLC-2. you can look on Hodgdon's site for load details. http://data.hodgdon.com/main_menu.asp

Thanks guys! I saw the Hodgdon book and velocities with H414 and Varget were very similar, but the H414 had somewhat lower pressures at the same velocities. So Gary, the 414 burns dirty in your opinion? Maybe I'll try the Varget.

yes in my opinion it does but i may not be pushing it hard enough or maybe pushing to hard. I have tried it and winchester760 both in 243, 308, 30-06, 8mm mauser and 338-06 and i keep ending up with something else. Your mileage may vary.

Can't speak for the H414, but I use Varget in my buddies 243 loads we worked up and it works great. easy Sub MOA load. I use it myself in a 243AI with 58gr. V-Max bullets and i love it. Also is my pick for my 308 Win. I get great accuracy with both of those.

The thing I like best about Varget is it seems to burn clean and outdoor temperature does not have an affect on the load. My point of aim is the same at 100yds regaurdless of summer or winter.

That pretty much sums it up. I use varget too in my 308 and 223.

Hogdon 414 and Winchester 760 are the same powder.
