I just ordered a 22-284 barrel with a 8 twist. I want to shoot some of those nice heavy bullets :) they are making now. I know its overbore, you don't have to remind me, but if I don't want to burn a barrel up I'll shoot something else that day. This isn't for target its for long range varminting and coyote work, I'm going to start with the barnes tsx and see what they do. Here in PA we don't have the same hunting style as other areas. A couple of groundhogs in a day is good and a coyote now and then. We don't sit on a prairie dog town (although I wish) so this barrel will last for awhile.

Just curious who has any experience with this caliber? And what have you found for good powders?

Do you have the P.O. Ackley books? I believe there is some load data there.

should be a lot of fun. I wonder if it will whistle when it goes off? :o

I shoot a 6mm-06 improved and use 4831sc, RL 25, H1000 and some regular IMR 4831. Just want to find a slow burning powder to get the best case density possible in my opinion. I get 3400 fps out of the 22-250 AI with 75gr a-max bullets and RL 22 so I would think you will start in this area and may end up with a slower powder yet.

I'm hoping h4831 will work, seems to work in a lot of other calibers I load for, so I maintain a good supply of it. I have a good pile of 7828 also, and I think some h1000. I was just wondering if anybody found a good pairing already.

I have done many. But the 284 case is much too long and I shortened it .250".
The best powders are Rel 19 and H4350. You don't need a long barrel either, 27" will give you 3600+ with an 80 gr. bullet using 43 grs. of powder.

That is pretty interesting, kind of ironic that he ended up loading it with 870. A discontinued powder that keeps turning up. When I was working up loads for my 7x300 weatherby everybody kept recommending 870. Thats great but I can't get it. :) Too bad the majority of the heavy bullets are for target. Some 80 grain gamekings would be sweet.

Thanks sharpshooter, I ordered a 26" to keep it usable but still keep my speed up. Off a bench I don't care but I don't like much above a 24 for carry, so 26 was a stretch for me.

Will do, I'm excited. I've been picking up heavy 22 bullets as I see them. Those barnes bullets are so sexy looking. :)

Dies were just shipped, going to have to put the new baby together and get it out for some load work. Will post pics when done.
