was outta imr4831 at the local store where i usually buy by shooting supplies so i decided to try some rl17 in my 25-06. anyone shooting this powder with any luck? I found a little data on it and it sounds promising, well pretty good velocities anyways. alliant says 53gr over 100gr partition is 3390, im shooting 54.5gr of imr4831sc at 3420fps so i figured what the heck ill give it a try. if anyone has any real world data i would appreciate the info.

R17 is a little fast for an 06, IMO. I generally either use 19, 22, or 4381SC for my 25-06. The difference in whether I use 19 or 22 is barrel length as a rule. My 28" barrel likes the slower R22.

yea with a 28" barrel id say it prolly was a little fast. however im shooting a 24" barrel. gonna load some in a few minutes and find out what itll do. i still have a little 4831 for my 100gr nbt, but was gonna try the 17 in 75gr vmax and 85gr nbts. hoping its not to fast for the smaller bullets with the 24" barrel. ill post some results tonight.

went and shot some loads of rl17 and 100gr nosler bts today and i am impressed. Went out with 3 loads worked up 1 was my old load of IMR4831sc .007 off the lands, 2 was 53 gr rl17 with WLR primers and 3 was 53gr rl17 with WLRM primers. the 4831 was the most accurate but the slowest at 3422, 3420, 3415, 3409, 3412 but it shot in the .4s. the fastest by far was 53gr rl17 with WLR primers at 3509, 3530, 3522, 3516, 3519 and it also shot very good in the .5s. It lost a little speed and accuracy with the magnum primers so i only shot 3 shots and they were 3465, 3485, and 3479 which is cooking but was all over the paper at about 1.25 group. no pressure signs with either load and recoil seems to be a little smoother. i didnt believe the chrony at first, hell thats approaching weatherby speeds. 31 degrees an wind was blowing 8-10 from the right. i think im gonna work with this load and get it down there in the .4s with the 4831. awesome powder, if you havnt tried it then you really need to do so. The gun is a savage 110fp 24" heavy barrel 25-06. all loads were with 100gr nosler ballistic tips once fired remington brass .007 off the lands.

I tried RL-17 in my 2506 AI and couldn't get any consistancy in ES, SD or accuracy.

Give RL-22 a try. From my experience, it is the go to powder in 25-06.

I just bought some relloader 22 to compare to IMR 7828ssc. The IMR is very consistent and I am getting right at 3000fps second with a 117gr SP. I am now looking to see if I can reduce group size. Just not a chance to experiment at the range yet.

RL 19 and 85gr ballistic tips are my best 25-06 load. RL 22 and 100 gr nosler are second best in my gun, I do also use IMR 4831 in the 25-06 never tried the RL 17 yet.

just shot some 75gr vmax over rl17 and didnt know where to start so i did a little comparing with other powders and bullets and came up with 57.5gr of rl17. shot three shots .250 group and velocities were way up there. First shot was 3968, 2nd was 3955, and 3rd was 3975. these are weatherby speeds.

I would hate to see the throat of that barrel in a couple hundred rounds. R17 is a hotter burning powder than either R19 or 22 and the 25-06 is tough on barrels already. Just something to think about.

nah, gonna tune it down a little bit, just hope i keep some of that accuracy
