last friday night me and my partner set up on the edge of a crop feild, full moon and fresh snow. looked like high noon. we sat for about 5 minutes or so i began to call, 10 seconds later my partner says "here he comes" the dog stopped at 40 feet from me looking right at me! i put the bead on his chest and gave him a load of 4 buck. he turned and ran as if not phased by the shot, my buddy gave him another dose only to speed up his retreat! are they wearing body armor or what? very puzzling.

You each missed, I have shot many coyotes with 4 buck and it is lethal to 40 yards every time. Not saying I have never missed but a front on shot and a fleeing shot are neither very high percentage shots. I have hit the rear half and had them get away but there is always blood, fur, and bone fragments.

prolly shot right under him. I have done it myself. Makes me kinda sad watchin a coyote run away after putting that much effort in to de-animating him.

he is prob. blind in one eye with no teeth left! it just sux cause that was the first shot i've had this year! had the stevens .243 loaded with 65 gr. v-max's sittin next to me to. but that close seemed like a good shotgun shot. next time he's that close he's getting a 200 gr .44 mag to the chest! we will meet again.

I have done the same thing. That is why I now use lead BB. More pellets.

I started using a Federal 3" copper plated BB load myself... just be warned that it can lead to an awful mess.

what kind of choke you using on that BB?

I usually have an improved modified in my 11-87. The improved modified works great with steel BB for long range snow goose also. I used to use a regular full choke for coyotes. Not much difference in either though.

I am using a Carlsons "Dead Coyote" choke tube out of my 870. (supposed to be for hevi-shot but works great with the copper plated BB's)
With this setup I feel comfortable taking shots out to 50-60 yards. DRT.

Have you patterned your gun with the 4 buck? I have killed a many a deer with my old Rem 1100 with a 30" full choke barrel with 2 3/4 Rem baby mag 4 buck 34 pellets. At 40 yards the pattern would be about 18" and the deer would drop in their tracks most of the time. Sounds like you both missed.

pattern was a little loose. tried a full choke tube, tightened it up good! got to try it out last saturday night on another one. 20 yrd. shot head on full sprint right to me! almost in self-defense. 42# male. next time i'll put the speaker away from me instead of in my lap! so close the muzzle flash lit his face up at night. gotta love it.
