Savage Edge .223, can a 5.56 be fired through it?

nope, not safely anyways, and I don't think it should even chamber. You can shoot .223 in a 5.56 chamber, but you can't (shouldn't be able to) shoot 5.56 in a .223 chamber.

It will certainly chamber and while it is a "no no" to fire 5.56 ammo in a 223 chamber and will likely get over standard pressure, it will generally not cause a "dangerous" situation in a modern, strong bolt action.

Of course if your 223 chamber has a long throat it may not be an issue at all.

You will see problems in semi autos and break open single shots etc.

Of course I would never say it is "ok" and your mileage may vary etc. etc.

Not the kind of ammo to see what your Edge will do anyway - not very accurate and steel core ammo isn't the best for your barrel.

There is no difference in actual chamber pressures between the two cartridges and the European CIP the equivalent of the American SAAMI rates the pressures as being equal. The real diffrence is the throat or leade in their chambering

"NATO chambers have a long leade, SAAMI chambers are tighter and have a short leade. SAAMI chambers are designed for increased accuracy, but will yield dangerously high pressures in guns using military ammunition and/or which are subject to high volume shooting.

Contact Savage and find out which reamer is used and if the throat is standard SAAMI or a variant. Savage has 1 in 9 twist barrels that are made for longer and heavier bullets and "might" have longer throats vs the 1 in 12-14 twist barrels.

I was told by a ??? not too reliable source that all the Savage .223's are cut to handle 5.56's. I will give them a call.

I hope you do call and then post the response from Savage. I would really like a definitive answer to this question. I imagine that there are others in the same boat.

I'm also intersted in a Savage that can fire 223 and 556. But, I wonder if cutting it for 556 would hurt the accuracy with 223. Anybody know?

Wonder why Savage would cut .223 barrels differently depending on what model the barrel was going on?

I would guess their 1:9 and 1:7 twist barrels can shoot 5.56 just fine. If they are making them with that kinda twist then you would think they were throated for heavier bullets.

I have heard mention of the 223wylde, what is this variation? I glean it was some sort of 223/556 compromise chamber, but I have not been able to confirm this.

The Wylde is considered a semi match chamber with a modified throat so that 5.56 can be used. The Wylde is common in ARs where a shooter may want the ability to switch between .223 ammo for targets/varmints and then shoot 5.56 for plinking or defense situations.

yep there is a difference between C.O.L, the 5.56 is slightly longer so it will cause throat wear. a slightly set back shoulder. also the 5.56 has higher pressure. i loaded half of my 30 rd mag with federal 223 and the other half with federal 5.56 the nato round is pretty hot compared to the 223 louder report and more recoil. i always been told if you have one stamped on the barrel 223 thats all you shoot is 223, if its marked 5.56 you can shoot nato rounds or 223. i am so glad i opted for the 5.56 chamber in my colt ar, because the federal nato ammo is cheap.
