Thanks in advance for any comments! I am new to the forum and to working on Savage/Stevens guns. I have built multiple AR’s so I have some experience with gunsmithing.

I have started converting my daughter’s Stevens 200 223 double stack to a 7mm-08 with DBM. I have found lots of great information on this sight already but have run into an issue that I can’t find any information on.

I am using Atlasworxs bottom metal and have it dry fitted to the action without the stock to make sure it feeds right, but the bolt when fully open is not past the back of the bullet in the mag. It is just an 1/8 or so with a 223 mag(have not changed bolt or barrel for 7-08 yet). It is worse with a 308 mag. See picturehttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20240420/e844e5d050e4eccdc2b65dd080c241f0.jpg

Can I just change the front bolt baffle to a long action? Has anyone else seen this issue?

Pull your bolt out and take a picture of the baffle. It looks like you still have the 223 baffle in it.

Also a 308 magazine is identical to a 7mm-08 magazine

If your current front baffle has the “wing” on the one side, it is there to limit the bolt throw for the shorter 223 cartridge. You will need to replace that with a standard front baffle.

Gunshack has them in stock. Says they’re for a long action but also is for short actions with cartridges like 22/250,243,6.5cm,7-08,308, etc.

That is what I was asking, but assumed that since 7mm-08 was considered a short action it would work with the same baffle.

Thanks for the help.

That is what I was thinking. I live close to the GunShack. I’ll run by and get one.

Thanks!

Or you could grind the fin off and flip it....

The 223 Front Baflle reduces the amount the bolt travels rearward. See the raised lip on the side? This is the portion that Fred said could be ground off so you can flip it over and use the short side.
