There is a very interesting article on page 24 of the May 2024 American Rifleman. It is a detailed description by Bill Ruger on his modification of a Savage Model 99 to make it a semi auto.

Bill was a garage gunsmith! He liked to putter around with different concepts. He turned a Savage 99 into a gas operated auto. I believe that's where he got the idea for the rotary magazine in the 10-22.
