I'm pretty new to center fire shooting and based in UK where target shooting opportunities does limit my exposure to various calibers.

I am going to buy a Savage 12 FT/R to build up my skills. I am trying to get feedback on the "perceived recoil" that a shooter will experience on the 12 FT/R between 223 and 308 caliber with standard ammo.

I'd appreciate feedback from anybody who has shot each from a Savage 12

Welcome to the group. Perceived 308 recoil would, I would think, be similar to what you would experience shooting the No 4 Mk 1 303 cartridge. The 223 has negligible recoil, especially in a bolt action rifle. 223 IS certainly cheaper to shoot than the 308.

Thanks for your advice.
I am leaning towards starting with the 223 to build my precision and my repeatability, as well as learning to deal with wind at mid range distances. Once I get these things nailed; I think I'll be on better foundations to upgrade to 308 with the additional recoil.

Are you going to be shooting competition where you are limited to the 223 308 cartridges. Both can frustrate starting around 500 meters and out. If it is available then a 6br 6 creed or 6.5 creed are much better options to start tagging x's at that range. If you are a 100 yard shooter then the 223/308 are just fine.

I would make a trip to the range and see what the other guys are shooting. Ask around about the availability of ammo or reloading components.
