Does anyone Know what thread size the barrel stud is. I recently acquired a model 99 and a previous owner installed a sling stud in place of the fore end screw. He cut the stud shank too short and it is only hanging on by about 2 threads. Also I suspect the threads on the stud are not quite right and have damaged the first threads in the barrel stud. I would like to re-tap the threads and get the proper screw.

The correct thread is is 8-40. However, the screws being sold on line for replacement forearm screws has the correct thread but the head is too small. They measure 0.24" and are fillister style. What is needed is a pan head screw with the head about 0.32" in diameter.

https://i.imgur.com/5RRswGc.jpegI was lucky enough to obtain a replacement stud for my rifle.
Just for fun I decided to try refurbishing the old one. I used my Mapp/Oxygen torch to fill the threaded hole with braze material. I then drilled it through with a 9/64" drill and tapped it with an 8-40 tap. See the attached picture. Sorry for the poor quality. https://imgur.com/a/oEpJBBEThis stud was a completely loose fit in the barrel dove tail so I added some material on one side. It would have to filled to fit. It would be a good repair I think.
