I dove into reloading after coming across some great yard sale and estate sale deals. So I bought a 308 Axis (since my deals included the components needed for 308) and loaded up some discontinued 165 grain sierra round nose bullets over 44 grains of w748 and CCI 200 primers. I thought this would be a deer hammer of a load. It did not disappoint me. I was able to get a shot off on a doe at about 50 yards which dropped her in her tracks. Now I am on the lookout for some more of the 165 gr. RN bullets. I wish someone would bring back that bullet.

Sounds like some bad medicine for the ungulates in your area! No pics?

Congratulations.

When I used a .308 in woods I'd load it down a little and use .30-30 bullets. That was a long time ago ;)

If you like the round nose Sierras there are always the 150gr and 180gr Sierra Pro Hunters.
Also the 165gr Game King hollow points have a more rounded nose than the Match Kings and shoot great as well as hammering game.
Just a couple of more proven options from Sierra.

I will have to keep an eye out for those 165gr. And give them a try.

That sounds like my luck, I come up with a great load and then I can't get one of the components, a perfect example is my 7-30 Waters Contender load, that barrel dotes on the Nosler 120 grain Ballistic tip bullet which is currently non-existent. Hopefully you come up with a workable substitute for the Sierra, a lot of round nose bullets have gone away lately.

If it helps any the Sierra165gr hpbt Gameking is the most accurate bullet I've tried in my 116 in 30-06 that Ive had since 1996. A max load of IMR4350 and a CCI BR2 primer and it will outshoot any bullet Ive tried including Match Kings and has even stacked 10 rounds into .446
I saw some on the shelf at Bass Pro just before Christmas.

I was able to pick up 2 boxes of the Speer 165gr on the auction site for a great price coupled with stupid high shipping….oh well, I have them now
