Went window shopping today and found a plain Axis 6.5 Creedmoor in the used rack, if it is used it was used very little, anyway I sold my last Axis last summer 204 heavy barrel, Boyd’s thumb hole stock, worked over trigger, was done, I’m getting old soon to be 69 looking for a lightweight deer gun, looks like I found it, going to keep it stock. Picked up a Mark II plane 22 also.
it was a good day, both came home for less than $400.
Checked the trigger pull 3 lbs. consistent perfect.

Sounds like a nice find. I am 78 and stopped hunting this year so looking to part with most of my hunting stuff. Going to keep an Axis with 30-06 barrel and swap to a 243 barrel in case I decide to go hunting next year.

Theres always H4895. You can follow the 60% of maximum charge rule with 125gr bullets for H4895 only and tune up.a load for that 30-06 that'll shoot as soft as a .243 and still whump.with a
30 cal metplat. Ive found the 125gr Vmax expand excellently at reduced velocity
If you want to look at published data search Hodgdon youth loads.
My grandkids nieces and nephews will go through 50.rounds of reduced .308 at the range and ask for more ammo. Still hammers deer.without all the recoil. I load em between 2200-2400 fps and they recoil like nothing and have way less.muzzle blast too.
More than one way to skin a cat.

There are a lot of powders you can use with reduced loads. I've used 4198, 3031, 4064, 4895, and Varget. Many of the loads go down to 50%, BUT, some need a filler at the lower levels.

Then there are the really light loads, like Red Dot and some other pistol powders, that can also be subsonic.

I am not a reloader , but have the 243 and an extra 270 and 22-250 I am going to keep for the Axis. Going to give the 110 to my son with 25-06, 270 and 30-06 barrels.

That 6.5 is plenty for any sized deer.

I had a 6.5 Creedmoor Encore barrel killed a few deer with it I have plenty of 6.5 reloading stuff, also have a Savage 12FV 6.5 Creedmoor that’s really fun to shoot.

That sounds like a very good day! I'm currently looking for a .270 or a 6.5. Would love to find something like that in VA.
