I'm near White Salmon Washington and a just ordered an Axis II Compact in 7mm-08. I've had several 30-06's, so this is my first "small" rifle other than a 22.

Welcome. Forgive me but, Small rifle? Do you mean in comparison to the 30-06? You are going to find everything about the 7mm-08 is much, MUCH closer to the 30-06’s you’ve had than to the 22. In power, recoil, effective target distance. Pretty much everything. 7mm-08 is a fantastic cartridge. You’re going to really like it. Mine is the next in line, the 6.5mm-08. Or 260 Remington. Had the standard 260 for several years and actually waiting for my new barrel in 260 Ackley Improved.

A 7-08 does about the same things a 30-06 does with a bit less recoil and handles shorter barrels. That's why I picked it. It's great to be here!
