35 cal bullet for deer

Have a 20" MGM barrel in 360 Dan Wesson. In theory, I should be able to achieve the same velocities as a pistol length 357 Max or better with similar weights. I'm looking for input on the 200gr FTX or a 200gr RN/FP in use for deer. Anybody able to give input that has used either of these for hunting out of the Max or DW?

I am currently pushing 158gr JSP to 1960fps with 20-21gr H110, CCI 400, Starline brass, with no pressure signs. Forget exact charge and OAL. My wife is the primary user, and I just want something with a better BC for her with a bullet will perform well on deer. TIA

Its a shame hornady discontinued the 180 gr single shot pistol bullet. I have plenty for myself, but that doesn’t help others

I'm tagging in on this one, I want to try the 200 grain FTX in my .357 Herrett but I haven't done so yet. Please keep us posted.

I've heard Fury makes bullets similar to the SSP, just never looked into them. If I decide to buy a box of the FTX, I'll share range experiences. It may be a while before tested on game. I do know the 140 FTX are good groundhog medicine in a 357 Mag carbine.

i think i'll try a 200gr RCBS HP for the 357 Herrett (Contender 10" barrel), after i kill a deer or two with my 30 Herrett (Contender 10" barrel).

Thanks for the link Todd, I have never seen these before. For the last few years I have been leaning toward cartridges that are cast bullet friendly.

i use 200gr RCBS FN GC for my 35/30-30, 9.3x57 is 275gr WFN GC, 444 Marlin is 280gr WFN GC, 45-70 is 405gr FN, 500 Linebaugh is 450gr WFN GC, 30-40 Krag is 165gr Ranch Dog, 44 mag is 280gr WFN, 44 Special is 255gr Kieth-type boolit and some more. i hunt deer and they rarely go 100-150 yards, 30 - 40 yards is average. two years ago, i shot a buck at 53 yards with my 35/30-30.

Have pretty much become a dedicated cast bullet shooter for anything over 30 cal and found myself pretty happy with the 200gr RCBS FN GC in the 35 Rem so I dumped my stash of around 1000 of the Hornady's. It did make me a little nervous doing so...

Yes and transitioning to powder coat from traditional lube for most of my bullets - still not fully proven with 35/375 rifle bullets. Not some kind of crusty old retired guy (yet) with lots of time on my hands so finding the time to scrounge lead/cast has been a problem. It has proven rewarding starting with 44 Mag and 45 Colt success.

When I said "dedicated cast bullet shooter for anything over 30 cal" I really should have said 35 cal and up as I don't load for/shoot 32s, 8mm, 338 cal. Actually looking forward to eclipsing 35 Rem cast hunting performance with cast in the 375JDJ. Funny that you don't hear of much about it even though there are not a lot of 375 jacketed choices suitable for it. Interestingly Doc Rogers spoke of good results. Wish he was on this board.

I've had good luck with the 140 gr. Hornady 140 FTX. in a 357 Max. Very accurate and good performance on deer <200 yds.

It's a shame that the Remington 200 gr round nose bullets are no longer available as reloading components. Those have a very soft lead core, and would probably work great at your velocity. I've used those and the Hornady 200 gr round nose bullets in my 35 Rem pistol (Contender). The Remington's are noticeably softer than the Hornady's. I haven't seen either bullet on the shelf in years, but the Hornady's were still available years after the Remington's disappeared.

I still have a few of the Hornady's on my shelf, along with a hundred loaded, but no Remington's.

NOE scaled the very successful RCBS 35 200-FN up to 375 which is what I'm working with.

that should work!!!! that is all i use in my 35/30-30 with 2400/tuft of dacron (1726fps).
