Does anyone deer hunt with this rifle? I’m not sure on what the barrel twist is if you do hunt with it what ammo do you use?

Don’t use one, however, I believe it’s a 1:12 twist rate. Stick with the lighter stuff. (Under 60gr pills)

Savage web site says 1:12. I suspect 55gn would be about max. That's enough for most varmints.

My kids did well with Federal Nosler Partition 60gr on Mule Deer Does and a friend only ever used a 22-250 for Coues Deer.

It is Unlawful to hunt White Tail Deer with anything less than 23 caliber in My home State of Virginia. And I don’t recommend it either. In fact, I like considerably bigger.

22-250 is fine for small deer. Especially if using an aftermarket barrel with a 1:9, 1:8, (or even 1:7 for the longest, heaviest pills), and take advantage of the heavier .224 bullets. (Over 70gr). Good shot & they go down. Though, most people feel more comfortable with larger caliber. One thing I’ve found so ironically funny, are those hunters who would never think of using a anything below X-caliber… yet they have no qualms with taking a shot from 600..800, 1000 yards or whatever with their trusty dusty, Thirty-Ought-Six! LOL!

Shot placement is what we are after, regardless of caliber. Besides that, modern ammunition has really changed things in the last few decades.

But he has a 1:12.

Yes, if you are good enough, or get close enough, to hit the heart most anything will work.
