Check with a local taxidermist. Both of them near me ship all hides out to be soft tanned, the last coyote I had done was a little over $50 including shipping.

go to Taxidermy.net They have a listing for tanners for the whole country. Elk hide is heavy so try to find one near you so you don't have to ship it as far or at all.

I took the hide from a Sika doe I took yesterday and have already called a taxidermist . Think he told me $75 whch sounds about right as I had one done a few years ago for about $60 or $65 .

i've tanned a LOT,,all hair on

look up the company Nitelight, the sell a self taning kit called "tannit",,,which is excellent.

or look up brain tanning on the net,,,it works great,,but either way,, it takes time. also go to taxidermy.com,,,their forum is very helpful

Wow, does your wife know you want to tan her hide? ;) Not nice to call it an elk hide, a hairy one at that! ;D My dad just cut a switch from a close tree. :o
