Axis worn barrel

I increased the OAL a lot and it seems to shoot fairly well again. I had groups from 3/8"-3/4" but I do think the 3/4" groups could have been affected by the wind gusts a little. It wasn't real windy but if it makes 1/4" difference it is the difference between a good group and a so so group. My last groups were the best when it was nearly calm.

I am still .090" off the lands even at the greatly increased OAL and there is only .060" of the bullet gripping the case. The bullet is deeper than that but with the boat tail bullet there is a portion that doesn't contact the neck. Is this too little?

Another thing I thought of, could a gunsmith cut the chamber deeper to get the freebore somewhat back to normal or would this cost enough that I should just get a new barrel?

Well, I checked with a gunsmith and it would cost more than a good quality barrel from one of the reputable aftermarket barrel specialists. Labor in this country is getting completely out of control. I might check with some other gunsmiths but I bet I would get a similar quote.

Yep, good gunsmiths cost a lot. Which is why there aren't many left. With the nut systems the 'bread and butter' for most gunsmiths is going away. In my youth many made a living by modifying surplus rifles, rebarrel jobs, stock inletting, etc. These days the CNC folks have taken care of stocks. The surplus guns cost more than new mfg. And many of us can change a barrel ourselves.

And then these days $50/hr is almost a living wage ;)

Wall yeah… because it’s only fairly recently that many are finding out there is no discernible accuracy difference between a shouldered barrel vs barrel nut barrel. If the Action was machined correctly & the barrel machined correctly, it will be accurate.

WHere are you located? I have a local guy who is very reasonable so it may be an option to ship it to him. Everything is out of control. Gas $4.50, Dennys Breakfast $15. Ridiculous.

Yep, it is. But, when I first had a regular job my monthly income was $650/mo, car payment was $150, Rent was $150 and a new Python was $375.

We have just been hit with the grand slam of inflation: heavy import taxes especially on China (raised prices across the board), COVID give away dollars, production pulled from cheap overseas labor to expensive US labor. And then folks decided they didn't get much from minimum wage jobs so they quit their second jobs and demanded more pay from their primary. Many states then increased minimum wages, which drove prices up more. Then OPEC decided to take their share. The lumber inflation bubble (never found where that one came from) that popped the price of houses. Not enough transportation to keep up, which increased those prices.

Don't know where this will level off. It needs to be clamped down but no one wants to as it makes the dollar debt worth less. So China's % interest in the US falls a bit (I think they still own almost as much debt as the Fed).

WHere are you located? I have a local guy who is very reasonable so it may be an option to ship it to him. Everything is out of control. Gas $4.50, Dennys Breakfast $15. Ridiculous.

Southeast Nebraska. I called Savage and I must say they offered me something I didn't expect. They said if I shipped the rifle to them they would install a new barrel for $125. This is going above and beyond the call of duty. I really didn't expect anything like that but I would like to know why the barrel eroded so badly. Savage guy mentioned this and that but then I told him of the other rifle that had a similar amount of rounds through it and eroded much less, .070" for the Savage and .008" for the other 223. Same loads, same cleaning procedure, roughly same number of rounds. The gunsmith I talked to thought it seemed way out of what it should be, told me a 223 should go 8-10000 rounds. I think he was off a long ways with that statement but I think they should last at least 3000 with excellent accuracy, provided you use good judgment with not heating the barrel.

Is gas really $4.50 there? It is $3.249 locally. I look for it go up soon though.

One more thing I would like to add, some may question my measurements but I am sure they are extremely close. I check 3 times and average them but they are usually with a thousandth or two of the first measurement.

Yes it sure is. I have a company vehicle so it doesn't sting too much and I only drive my 2000 F250 on weekends and did an oil change last week. 15 Qts of Mobile 1 but I'm good for another 5K.

Seems like not too long ago it was only $2.34/gal. And seems it was pretty much like THAT for Four years straight! Maybe it’s just me.
