simplest one would be a .25-06. you would be using the same size brass and should have no feed problems. nothing to change but the barrel then. You start down the path to rounds based off the .308 and you have to make some changes and allowances for feeding.

I have an older model 112 or 114 (I have too many models to remember which one has got which barrel) any way where were we Oh yes. My long action savage will feed the .243 cases just fine without making any changes to the feeding rails.
I currently have a 30-06, .243 and a 6.5X284 that I swap on that receiver without changing anything for feeding the different cases.

To change a barrel, you'll need a barrel or action vise, appropriate headspace GO guage or piece of factory brass in your caliber of choice ( though for a first timer I recommend a headspace guage) and a barrel nut wrench. There's a lot of good information in the tech section on barrel changing.

Your .243 would make a nice varmint gun. I have two .243's that I put 55gr Nosler BT through and they decimate prairie dogs out past 600m. But if you don't have any feed problems with the .243 then I would personally go with 22-250 or 22-250AI. I love my 22-250 for varmints.
