Savage discourages use of 5.56 labeled ammo, such as M193, M885, etc. And if they were to somehow prove it was used, your warranty is void. But here in the real world, many thousands of times have these ammunitions been used with no repercussions. As I have said before, no one has ever experienced a KABOOM from using quality, NATO 5.56 in a Savage. Nor has it even been heard of apart from rumor.

However, every shooter should become educated before experimenting with ammunition. It’s necessary to know pressure signs & what they mean. You should be able to read the brass spent by your firearms, and understand various characteristics of pressure.

Savage says to not use military ammo in any of their firearms.

Many manufacturers will disallow use of military ammo in their firearms regardless of how they are chambered. And many will tell stories of a weapon that 'blew up' due to use of said ammo.

Yes, just about every manufacturer with standard 223 chambers says not to use 5.56. And absolutely correct Charlie… the “stories”, LOL! Although it’s as I’ve said. No standard 223 chamber has EVER gone KABOOM, as a result of using standard NATO 5.56. Now, I’m not speaking of the anecdotal cases out there. And anyone who’s “heard” of it, there some other underlying issue….set back cartridge most likely. (Great way to turn 60K PSI into 100K+ in a hurry!)

The no military thing for Savage extends to 7.62/.308 and .30cal/.30-06. Note that they require matching marking on barrel to ammo (headstamp?).

Then there is the reverse that should be considered. Using heavy bullet .30-06 loads in a Garand can cause problems.

I can't count how much 7.62 ammo I've fired in .308 rifles, more than 20 years ago. My .223 experience is limited to my Axis and it never even noticed a difference. Only a few hundred rounds. Once I figure out how inaccurate they were I started handloading for it.
