Looking to order a 24" fast twist (probably 1:8) .270 Winchester for a small shank 110. It will be a sporter contour, threaded and used for hunting. It seems there a lot of aftermarket options so I thought I'd toss it out for recommendations. Thanks.

Since the ER Shaw barrels are 1:10 then you'd have to go to something like a Criterion or Shilen. Unless you want to spend a lot more.

Can also go X-Calibed. But they don’t do a 1:8. They have 1:7.5 or 1:9, which actually the 1:9 might be the better option. Otherwise, yeah, look to Shilen or Criterion.

BTW, why do you feel a 1:8 is needed for a 270?

McGowen is an option for 1:8 as well.

Lots of options out there. Determining your budget will narrow down the list and probably help make your decision easier.

Sure will. Telling us why you need an 8 twist would be helpful too.

Indeed. I asked that same question over a week ago & the OP has not responded. Wonder where he went?

Probabaly to shoot heavier bullets like the 6.8 Western.

I want an 8 twist for 150 grain LR AB or 165 LR AB. I suspect there will be a lot more .277 caliber bullets due to the 6.8 Western. With my .270s, I've generally had better groups with the lighter bullets. I can't be sure it is related to barrel twist, but who knows. In the near future, I suspect there will be factory rifles with fast twist barrels for the .270 Win and .270 WSM. If Savage were to partner with Hornady or Federal and release a fast twist .270 WSM, I think it would be a success (and kill the 6.8 Western).

In the end, I went a different direction. Purchased a Tikka T3X. May someday put a 24" tube on the Tikka, but I should stay occupied for the next year with my current .277 bullets and powder.

Well, you certainly don’t need 1:8 for the 150’s. It’s more for the couple newer, 165 & 170gr options.(I believe there are only 3 or 4 options above 150gr. in .277”.)

What is the budget you are adhering to? McGowan, Shilen, Chriterion & X-Caliber are in the same ballpark. I suggest looking through their wares & see if one stands out to you.

I went a different route. Decided that if I was going to rebarrel, I was going to do it with a Tikka action. On the 150 LR AB, I've seen a lot of reports that they aren't stabilizing in a 1:10. Even Nosler recommends a 1:9. It may be a couple years but when fast twist .270 Wins and WSMs become factory offerings, I suspect there will be a nice selection of high BC bullets in the 150-170 range. Apparently, Browning announced a fast twist .270 at the shot show. I suspect the .270 WSM is right behind.

I think they are nice. I just never see one of the target models, only the light hunter versions. Same with Howa's. And then there is the barrel swap thing that makes Savages so nice.

That’s actually now available on every manufacturer. Tikka, Howa, Bergera.. as well as any Custom Action. Barrel nuts are made for just about every manufacture. Be it Savage 1.055x20, Remington 1.060x16, 1.00x16 Tikka/Ruger & even the M26x1 of Howa/Weatherby.
