Do you have to use the same brand shell holder as your die? It doesn't seem like it'd make a difference.

Makes no difference. Just note that the part numbers for given case heads are different between brands.

I.e.: #16 from RCBS is 9mm Luger but #16 for Lee is 7.62mm X 54mmR and Redding #16 is 11mm X 60mmR Mauser. Not even close.

Note also that non-press shell holders, like the Lee auto-prime, don’t fit reloading presses.

Final note: I don’t know about turret presses or Dillon equipment, but RCBS, Lee, Lyman, Redding, Hornady, Pacific interchange for single-stage press dies and shell holders.

Since I reload in a progressive, then, usually no. I do use a lot of Lee dies, but, not the shellholder that comes with them.

Very slight machining tolerances , so one may slide into your press easier then another. Or if your die is set to cam over, another holder may be loose or tighter. But mostly universal now. As said above each company has there own number chart

I have different brands but always use the same one for a given caliber and it goes in the box with the dies.

Im not an expert but ‘Standard shell holders should have a .125 deck height, in basic overview a standard ( perfect world) resizing die will be .125 short of the sammi chamber specs from case head to shoulder datum. Hopefully lol
