Thanks for all the help.
They guy that did my transfer was out of a lot of the normal scope rings.
Most were 1" or high rise.
He had some UTG rings that were low profile and look pretty rugged.
I got those and he told me if I didn't like them later to bring them back and he would let me trade them in for full price.

I'll try to go shoot tomorrow.
The barrel to scope clearance is great.
Thanks again

.308, but now I'm itching for a 6.5 CM.
They are getting so popular.

Congrats on your purchase. I've had my Tactical in .308 for almost a year now. Absolutely love it.

I installed mine into an MDT chassis about a month ago. Totally cool.

Getting? From my view of goings on, the 6.5CM has been among the most popular in rifles for many years now. The oldest thread I can find HERE is from 2011; posted by WBM who is one of our pioneers using it. :thumb: The mainstream popularity blew up in & around 2016-on. That is when I built my last Savage(before last year’s RE-build), and I was faced with choosing either the 6.5 Creedmoor or 260 Remington. I can say the 6.5CM wasn’t pouring off the shelves until after I finished my build. I chose the 260Rem, and while I’ve not regretted it & would still choose it even in hindsight as I’m planning to go 260AI, I can absolutely see why others may have regretted their decision in the same place. Especially if their rifle’s diet consists of factory ammunition. I knew from the beginning my rig would be ingesting only reloads, so I wasn’t worried. However, many shooters “plan” to become reloading warriors, but their plan never truly materializes. Just the reality that not everyone wants to put the time & research into it.

Jackal, your 308 will serve you will. It does everything the 6.5 will do under say 800-1000yds. And just checking MidwayUSA, they had almost 80 different loads for 308 Ammunition, compared in just under 40 Loads for 6.5 Creedmoor available. Not to mention it’s a dream to reload if you so choose. So easy, so responsive. Serious! Work up a load? PSSSHT! For 308 you can draw a known load from a hat, and chances are it’s gonna shoot straight. Is the 6.5MM a better target caliber overall? Yes. Did you waste money by getting your Savage chambered for 308Win? Absolutely NOT!

Thanks for the good words Dave.
I've seen the Creedmoor around as much as 300 blkout for the past years.
This last Fall every gun store was overstocked with 6.5 CM.
I bought the .308 hoping one day there will be bulk rounds available, but I can handload my target rounds.
The boxed ammo for CM is shocking.

I ordered this .308 because all the local shops that have rifles, 30 rifles and 23 are 6.5 CM , another 3 are .300 mag of some sort, then usually a Grendel, or aPRC, or a Lapua.

We plan on shooting the heck out of this .308.
My Son bought a 1500 Howa .308 in November.
Now we have some competition.
I'm getting him into reloading, and he'll help split the costs, too. Haha

Did you look at the cross bolt on those UTG rings? It was years ago but had a friend that tried utg rings and they messed up his pic rail. Instead of using a square bolt that would fit in the rail they used a large round cross bolt and between that and the rings not wanting to stay tight it ended up rounding out the corners on his rail. It was still functional and he just used different slots when mounting his new rings. Maybe they have changed- but something to look at.

There was likely a problem with those specific rings. The UTG rings are fine. Of course, not a top or even what you’d call a mid tier scope ring, but they are made from 6061 Billet Aluminum and generally very acceptable machining from what I’ve seen. I generally recommend not using 6061 Rings. It’s very soft & quite flexible compared to 7075. However, they still work just fine. The cross bolts used are designed to work both Weaver & the larger, more consistently sized Picatinny slot. Again, I prefer purely Picatinny rings, as they are less apt to have any play between cross rail & slot.

They will be fine. You can always upgrade after some time with the rifle & most importantly, researching your options. One piece of advice to start.. In the future, DON’T purchase rings or mounts in a store. Research & purchase On-Line.

Oh ok, good. I got that rifle in 6.5 PRC. It was on sale for -$100 and I had a gift card for $100. Stuck it in a MDT chassis and have been quite pleased with it.

Stick with the .308 for a bit. Like Dave said it is a fine choice out to 1000yd. Last I heard the F/TR was still limited to .223 and .308.

Do not be surprised if the bulk .308 is not shooting less than MOA. I stopped shooting bulk or std surplus in my .223 and .308 cause it frustrated me to not get the smaller groups or hit the bull.

Good reading:
