I've swapped a couple barrels on Savage rifles, but have always kept things the same caliber. Giving some thought to taking a Model 10 .308 and swapping it over to .223.........for the bolt, would I only need to change the bolt head to one that matches .223?

I'm thinking I can get this done with a prefit, barrel nut, and new bolt head, but wanted to ask first.

Thanks
Joe

Will need to change the bolt head and magazine/follower as well.

What Jim said is the only thing you missed. Just wondering…. Why go from 308 to 223? Most of the time, it’s the other way around.

I have another .308 that I swapped the factory for a Criterion. My son is looking to move up from his .22, but he's not a fan of recoil, so figured this could be a nice project........plus, no room left in my safes.

I swapped from a 243 to a 223 and aside from the bolt head and magazine I also swapped the front baffle. The lug on one side is longer to prevent the bolt from going so far back. Check it out on Gun Shack. It was not that expensive.

+1 on this. The extended baffle is not required but can shorten your bolt throw, which is nice if you’re shooting 223.
