How about photographs of yours as well?

A Lyman or Marbles tang sight is essential on an early Savage 1899 rifle!

Ya, pictures on this site is an effort in futility!! They need to change to a cut and paste or drag and drop and get rid of the "host site" crap!!

And here’s the factory letter for this rifle.

Date is exactly when I would have expected from other data I've gathered. Nice to get more confirmation on that!

The 26" barrel notation is odd. The ledgers at that time didn't record if the barrel was 26", that was the default and they'd only record other lengths if necessary (22", for example). An 1899H would be recorded as FWT with no barrel length, an 1899F as Carb with no barrel length. Since Cody had a strict policy of not putting something into a letter that's not in the ledger... was 26" actually recorded for yours, or did they "interpret" that?

Well dang, I just checked one of my recent letters on an early gun and it says 26" also. Cody must be including that now even if it's not logged specifically. Interesting. 99.9% of the time that will be right.. but the ledgers aren't 100% accurate. They'll eventually put 26" in a letter for a gun with a special order barrel length that wasn't logged, and somebody is going to be unhappy.
